Yes..a childrens books but a fun read for grown ups too !! Fortunately, the milk / by Neil Gaiman ; illustrated by Skottie Young.
Fortunately, the Milk --- by Neil Gaiman, Illustrations by Skottie Young ... how odd things can get in this hilarious, illustrated children's book (8-12 to "adult children of all ages") of "time travel and breakfast cereal," that begins with a walk to the store for some milk, then somehow manages to pack in Aliens & bits of every adventure story plot written in the past 300 years ... Frenetic, but hard not to love a novella that borrows equally from Calvin & Hobbes and The Usual Suspects ;-)

Kingsmith, Book Worth, Reading Aloud, Mary Rayner, Gallant Pigs, Movie, Babes, Children Book, Dick King Smith
Dick King-Smith is well-known for his animal stories and Babe is by far the best. No wonder that it was made into a movie! We just finished reading it aloud to our 5-7 year olds. Recommended as a read aloud for early readers and a read alone for advanced readers. Colloquialisms and local English expressions may need some explanation for early readers even if they acn generally read well. Wonderful, heartwarming story.
Babe, the Gallant Pig by Dick King-Smith, illustrated by Mary Rayner. A still much beloved childhood favorite.
GoReaderGo.com recommends Babe: The Gallant Pig as one of our favorite read aloud chapter books for younger readers.

Frances Hodgson Burnett - The Secret Garden (A ten-year-old orphan comes to live in a lonely house on the Yorkshire moors where she discovers an invalid cousin and the mysteries of a locked garden. Burnett's classic story of a disagreeable and self-centered little girl and her equally disagreeable invalid cousin is as real and wise and enthralling now as it was when it was first written over 75 years ago.)

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren, with Illustrations by Lauren Child Viking, A Division of Penguin Young Readers Group Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren With illustrations by Lauren Child. First published in Sweden in 1945 and in the United States in 1950, at a time when little girls in books tended to be neat, obedient, and quiet, the larger-than-life Pippi Longstocking came as an unwelcome shock to some parents and a breath of fresh air to others. Pippi Longstocking: The Story This classic novel for children features a heroine who is super-strong, independent, and lives just as she pleases. Although 9-year-old Pippi is all alone, Lindgren makes it clear that she is to be envied, not pitied. She had no mother or father, which was actually quite nice, because it meant that no one could tell her that she had to go to bed just when she was having the most fun. Her amusing antics are a source of shock and interest to the inhabitants of the tiny Swedish town where she lives, particularly to the children who live next door. This edition of Pippi Longstocking is enlivened by the quirky mixed media collages of British author and illustrator Lauren Child, who has created some feisty female characters of her own, most notably Clarice Bean.

My Father's Dragon - Ruth Stiles Gannett. Supposedly great first chapter book to read aloud to young (3 year old) kids
My Father's Dragon is a children's novel by Ruth Stiles Gannett about a young boy, Elmer Elevator, who runs away to Wild Island to rescue a baby dragon. Both a Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, it is the first book of a trilogy whose other titles are Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. "This was the first chapter book I read to my son, when he was 4, and I couldn't have found a better choice. The book's language is simple and direct. And there's a black and white drawing on almost every other page, which is perfect, because most young children still need a picture to look at while they're listening. The best thing about the book for me was that even though there's plenty of action (mostly involving the little boy outsmarting a series of wild animals in order to reach the dragon), there's nothing the least bit scary here." -Amazon review

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo - it's a children's book but I loved every page.
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo Despereaux Tilling was born with his eyes open, a very strange way for a mouse to come into this world. Things get stranger as he behaves in un-mouse like ways, for one.. falling in love with a human princess. This is also a story about a dungeon, a rat named Roscuro, and a girl named Miggery Sow. This (sometimes twisted/dark) fairy tale is very engaging and does well as a read aloud (currently reading to my 3rd graders!).
