Both the interiors & exteriors of the building made extensive use of terracotta tiles to resist the sooty climate of Victorian London, manufactured by the Tamworth-based company of Gibbs & Canning Limited. The tiles & bricks feature many relief sculptures of flora & fauna, with living & extinct species featured within the west & east wings respectively.
