This urban backyard measures just 45 feet wide, but by careful placement of outdoor living spaces and strategic use of plants, the homeowners created a private paradise in just five years. Draw guests into the garden by locating seating areas away from the house. Use small trees or large shrubs to block the view of your home, and your outdoor room can feel like it's a million miles away.

stepping stone path Have Fun Garden paths don't have to be solid. Try using a series of stepping-stones that run through the lawn for a natural, informal look. Test Garden Tip: Make mowing easy by sinking the top of your stepping-stones to soil level. That way you eliminate the need for edging.

Combine Materials for a Timeless Path: I just need some old brick since the garden already has the BridleWreath Spirea and the little statuary.
Combine Materials for a Timeless Path For visual enrichment, use a mix of materials in your brick walkway. Brick and stone create the appearance of a patchwork-quilt path that leads past beautiful gardens to a cozy seating area. Combining the stone and brick gives the path a personal touch. Additionally, it creates a worn and timeless look that makes the walkway appear as if it was always there.

Add Fragrance- I just finished a design like this for a customer but I built it right to the edge of a new pool they installed! I put english lavender, fragrant roses, day lillies, asiatic lillies, irises, garden phlox and some other fragrant cottage garden types up to the edge of the retaining wall along the pool so they have fragrant swims. :) It's amazing!

Natural Simplicity A simple, soothing design incorporating elements from nature is often ideal for a small patio, as overly elaborate decor may overwhelm the space. Nature has been integrated into this patio through a stone wall, lush greens, and colorful flowers. A few well-placed steps add dimension and stretch the space visually.
Similar to how banquette seating saves space in a small kitchen, a built-in bench is perfect for a small patio because it doesn't require extra space for chairs around the dining table. Love the yellow door.
Pops of color are a great way to dress up a contemporary entrance on a minimally styled exterior. Here, the homeowners made use of cheerful shades of yellow and turquoise, repeated in pillows, containers, and on the front door. The door itself is an unusual but welcome choice: A Dutch version that opens separately on top and on bottom. A sconce -- traditional in its design, contemporary in its oversize scale -- continues the modern-influenced aesthetic.
