I would like the students to think more about components to a page that all relate.  A layout similar to this would be great.  The little star replaced with a crane or other folded element.  Lines could be "fold lines".  Instead of circular images would use triangle

Overall Design: I really like how the table of contents shows a variety of different pictures thought the year and incorporates everyone. It shows diversity

Fun grid pattern that allows a way to get more photos into piece. Tells story of project without any words using the TOC.

I really like this layout for an index. The fragmented photographs work well, as do the transparent numbers that match the corresponding articles. I like the unity of colors as well.
