This site provides a compilation of www resources and scientific literature on primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a chronic cholestatic liver disease characterized by periductal inflammation of both intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts. Progressive loss of bile ducts impairs bile flow, ultimately resulting in cirrhosis. http://www.psc-literature.org/
What is #PSC? PSC Support PSC is short for Primary Sclerosing #Cholangitis, a chronic #liver disease whereby the bile ducts, which are the passages that carry bile from the liver to the intestines, become narrowed from inflammation and fibrosis. Over time, the scar tissue builds up and can block parts of the #bile ducts completely. The blockages can occur in any part of the biliary tree: inside the liver itself (intrahepatic) or outside the liver (extrahepatic).
Baltacha was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver condition which compromises the immune system, aged 19.Former British number one tennis player Elena Baltacha has died of liver cancer, aged 30
#Cholangitis is inflammation of the bile ducts of the liver. #Sclerosing is inflammation that leads to the extensive formation of fibrous and scar tissue. In #primary_sclerosing_cholangitis (PSC), the bile ducts inside and outside the liver have become inflamed and scarred.
Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a slow, progressive disease. Once diagnosed, treatment is directed at managing symptoms and opening narrowed bile ducts. A great deal of research is underway aimed at preventing damage to the bile ducts, improving symptoms and prolonging life. By working closely with the physician, there is good reason to expect a favorable long-term outlook.
PSC has a significant association with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease primarily affecting the large intestine. As many as 5% of patients with ulcerative colitis may progress to develop primary sclerosing cholangitis and approximately 70% of people with primary sclerosing cholangitis have ulcerative colitis
LivingWithPSC.org is a dedicated patient-to-patient support community for families affected by Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. LivingWithPSC.org is powered by BensFriends.org, patient support communities for rare diseases, and is run by volunteer moderators who have been affected with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.
