abandoned ships - from Google Search
this was once the 4th largest body of water on earth... and now the Aral Sea is a vast desert waste land of rotting ships... and apparently camels.
The Aral Sea fishing industry, which had employed some 40,000 and reportedly produced one-sixth of the Soviet Union's entire fish catch, has been devastated, and former fishing towns along the original shores have become ship graveyards. The town of Moynaq in Uzbekistan had a thriving harbor and fishing industry that employed approximately 30,000 people now it lies miles from the shore. Fishing boats lie scattered on the dry land that was once covered by water; many have been there for 20 years.

the disappearing of the aral sea has left behind a desert filled with shipwrecks ... 50 yrs ago, the sea was the world's 4th largest inland sea but started shrinking by more than 50% due to soviet irrigation projects ... mismanagement of land and water resources have caused degradation extending to the entire sea basin, damaging fish production and causing high salinity and pollution as well as violent sand storms ... fresh water supplies have diminished and human health problems have risen
Muynak is an abandoned city in northern Karakalpakstan
The disappearing of the Aral Sea has left behind a desert filled with shipwrecks. Once the world’s fourth-largest saline body of water, it has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s, after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet Union irrigation projects.

I so badly want to wait til the tide goes out and then go climb on this ship. (doesn't it look almost like a miniature if you look at it just the right way? something about the scale and crop of the photo...)
