Excerpt from the poem East Coker by TS Eliot: "I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope / For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love, / For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith / But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting. / Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought: / So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing." This is what you shall do: love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning god..., re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face.... -Walt Whitman

Henry David Thoreau

This, my friends, is Henry David Thoreau, aka the most awesome man ever. Thoreau was an author, philosopher, transcendentalist (he was good friends with Ralph Waldo Emerson), and all-around badass. Plus, he had a neck beard. His most famous works are Walden and Civil Disobedience. He strongly believed that we should find our inner divinity and truly live, free of society’s customs and standards. In fact, he built a little shack on Walden Pond and lived there alone for two years.
Henry David Thoreau: American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, and leading transcendentalist. On Walden Pond is one of my favorite books.
Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817- May 6, 1862) was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, and leading transcendentalist. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss. You will forever be my favorite childhood author.
the man behind the good reads - Theodor Guisel aka Dr. Seuss #seuss #drseuss #books
Dr. Seuss [Theodor Seuss Geisel] early work was pretty racist, especially towards Japanese people. Seuss defended himself, saying: "... when the Japs are planting their hatchets in our skulls, it seems like a hell of a time for us to smile and warble: ‘Brothers!’ It is a rather flabby battle cry. If we want to win, we’ve got to kill Japs ...."
Theodor Seuss Geisel (2 March 1904 – 24 September 1991), better known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss, was a famous American writer and cartoonist best known for his children's books.

Gwendolyn Brooks was a highly regarded, much-honored poet, with the distinction of being the first black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. She also was poetry consultant to the Library of Congress—the first black woman to hold that position—and poet laureate of the State of Illinois. Many of Brooks's works display a political consciousness, especially those from the 1960s and later, with several of her poems reflecting the civil rights activism of that period. Her body of work gave her, according to Dictionary of Literary Biography contributor George E. Kent, "a unique position in American letters. Not only has she combined a strong commitment to racial identity and equality with a mastery of poetic techniques, but she has also managed to bridge the gap between the academic poets of her generation in the 1940s and the young black militant writers of the 1960s."
Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African-American to win a Pulizter Prize May 1st, 1950. Brooks was awarded this honor for her book, “Annie Allen.”

1987 Rita Dove for Thomas and Beulah Straw Hat In the city, under the saw-toothed leaves of an oak overlooking the tracks, he sits out the last minutes before dawn, lucky to sleep third shift. Years before he was anything, he lay on so many kinds of grass, under stars, the moon's bald eye opposing. He used to sleep like a glass of water held up in the hand of a very young girl. Then he learned he wasn't perfect, that no one was perfect. http://www.alittlepoetry.com/dove.html
