Gem Corn, Nature, Glasses Gem, Colors, Beautiful, Gardens, Gemcorn, Saving Seeds, Native American
Like many heirloom treasures, Glass Gem corn has a name, a place, and a story. Its origin traces back to Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer living in Oklahoma. Barnes had an uncanny knack for corn breeding. More specifically, he excelled at selecting and saving seed from those cobs that exhibited vivid, translucent colors. Exactly how long Barnes worked on Glass Gem—how many successive seasons he carefully chose, saved, and replanted these special seeds—is unknown. But after many years, his ...
The nearly translucent Glass Gem Corn looks more like a work of art than a vegetable. And it's clear why: The translucent rainbow kernels look more like Swarovski crystals than food. But how did these brilliant kernels come to be? The story begins decades ago with Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer and breeder in Oklahoma who started crossing different Native American corns for beauty. He chose vibrant, translucent colors and eventually ended up with Glass Gem Corn.
More beautiful glass gem corn. Why are there so many vibrant colors in a single ear of corn? You don’t usually see flowers of different colors on a single tree. Each kernel is actually a different corn plant (or the seed of one) with a unique mix of genes inherited from its parents. #garden #genetics #corn

Chioggia Guardsmark Beet Seeds
60 days. Well, here's a whole new look in beets . . . though technically it's a very OLD look! Chioggia is an heirloom beet from Italy, renowned for its unusual bullseye stripes of red and white as well as for its sweet, peppery flavor. Guardsmark builds on that heritage by adding modern vigor, higher yields, and larger fruit size. And somehow along the way, those dark red rings have turned a neon shade of magenta! But Chioggia Guardsmark is not simply a beet masquerading as a red onion. Its ...
