Most lookouts on the South Rim are promontories. The Abyss, along Hermit's Rest Road, just west of Mohave Point, is actually an indentation, but the views are still fantastic. From here you get a real feel for the depth of the Grand Canyon; in front of you is only air, with a sheer 3000' drop to the Tonto Platform, a wide sandstone terrace about two-thirds of the way down.
