Most lookouts on the South Rim are promontories. The Abyss, along Hermit's Rest Road, just west of Mohave Point, is actually an indentation, but the views are still fantastic. From here you get a real feel for the depth of the Grand Canyon; in front of you is only air, with a sheer 3000' drop to the Tonto Platform, a wide sandstone terrace about two-thirds of the way down. The lyrics referred to in the title kept running through my head (courtesy of Jimi Hendrix) the entire evening I spent shooting from this location last summer. This pano was the result of a crop from a seven vertical shot stitch and was taken at the Desert View overlook of the Grand Canyon's south rim.
