Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona If you look in the distance, I think that might be "Newspaper Rock" where dozens of petroglyphs have been painted into the rock walls - including the famous humpbacked flute player Kokopelli. The Blue Mesa Trail is a very pretty section of Petrified Forest National Park , featuring these beautiful painted hills with its distinctive chinlee formations made up of coloured bands of volcanic ash, sandstone, and rock that change in hue from blues and…

The desert stretches from the Grand Canyon National Park into the Petrified Forest National Park and runs roughly astride and just north of the Little Colorado and the Puerrco Rivers. The area within the Petrified Forest National Wilderness is also known as the Painted Desert Wilderness. Much of…

2010 - The Painted Desert

Petrified Forest National Park If you look closely at these beautiful coloured chinle formations, you can see the effects of erosion. The soft clay, volcanic ash and sandstone that make up the chinle hills gradually erode and are swept away by wind and rain, exposing petrified wood logs that eventually tumble to the desert floor and break apart. The Blue Mesa Trail is a very pretty section of Petrified Forest National Park featuring these multi-hued hills with its distinctive chinlee…

Reaching New Heights

This was Pilot Rock in the painted desert which is the highest point in the Petrfiried Forest National Park. I didn't realize it was the highest point until I was reading facts about the place just now. The elevation rises to 6,243ft with the peak prominence being 524ft (i read about this as well and sorta understand it). At this point in the trip to the Petrified Forest, I was getting cold, Scotch was getting restless and I was running out of time before the park closed. The lighting was…
