DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI (1828-1882) - "Beata Beatrix"...Rossetti was becoming depressed and on the death of his beloved Lizzie, buried the bulk of his unpublished poems with her at Highgate Cemetery, though he later had them dug up. He idealised her image as Beatrice in a number of paintings, such as this one.

Beata Beatrix, an 1870 oil on canvas painting depicting Beatrice Portinari (1266–90), subject of Dante Alighieri's La Vita Nuova, at the moment of her death; Dante claims to have met her only twice, on occasions separated by nine years, but was so affected by the meetings that he carried his love for her throughout his life. Michelangelo's statue of David
If you love art Florence is the place to visit.
Michelangelo's David - I know it's a cliche but I honestly love this sculpture (and tbh most of Michelangelo's works). I had seen pictures of this and the impact is entirely lost, it wasn't until I stood in front of it that I understood it's genius. The aura is intense, even from the back of the gallery.
September 13th 1501: Michelangelo begins on ‘David’ On this day in 1501, Italian sculptor Michelangelo began work on his statue of David. Michelangelo was asked to create a statue of the biblical hero showing him as a symbol of Florentine freedom. He crafted the statue out of marble. Michelangelo spent two years on the large statue and it was unveiled in September 1504. Michelangelo was one of the most famous artists of the Renaissance and went on to paint the ceiling of the Sistine

Robert Rauschenberg's Untitled "combine" 1963, mixed media. This artist lived and worked in Florida until he died in 2008. He liked to work in monochrome and mix materials and objects, hence the title of 'Combines'...a series of works he created. Some of his work is considered Pop Art, but he is categorized as a Neo-Dadaist.
Robert Rauschenberg's combines: This is Rauschenberg’s attempt to compare art and everyday life by using objects from his house and placing them on his painted canvas. Not only did these works challenge the viewer to reconsider what constitutes art (my favorite question of modern art), but I think it presents a kind of democratic goal that seems very American to me. By bridging the gap between high art and ordinary life, Rauschenberg opened his work to interpretation from a larger demographic, especially those who weren’t educated in art. Learning about Rauschenberg’s work gave me a better understanding of Paul Taylor’s pedestrian style of dance, especially when I learned that Taylor hired the artist as a costume designer.

Paige Bradley created one of the most striking sculptures in recent times. Her masterpiece, entitled Expansion, is a woman seeking inner piece but fractured and bleeding with light. “From the moment we are born, the world has a container already built for us to fit inside: a social security number, a gender, a race, a profession,” says Bradley. “I ponder if we are more defined by the container we are in than what we are inside. Would we recognize ourselves if we could expand beyond our bodies?”

By Edmund Dulac, from The Little Mermaid, for Andersen's Fairy Tales. "At the mere sight of the bright liquid, which sparkled in her hand like a shining star, they drew back in terror."
John William Waterhouse - The Siren Skye Alexander in the book Mermaids: The Myths, Legends, and Lore explains that mermaids were a representation of men's sexual desires back in the Victorian period. A mermaids tail was a representation of the "ultimate chastity belt" and in this image the mermaid was show as having scales from her knees down leaving her "pertinent parts exposed."
