AUTHOR OF THE DAY: F. Scott FitzgeraldFrancis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the greatest authors of the 20th century. His work was synonymous with the Jazz Age, a term he coined himself. He quickly rose to fame and married the love of his life, which ironically both lead to his downfall. As a young boy, Fitzgerald was bright, handsome and talented. When he was 13 years old he attended the St. Paul Academy. He published his first shorty story in the school newspaper. After graduating high school, Fitzgerald enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve in World War I. Fearful that the war may end in tragedy as well as his literary pursues, he submitted a novel called, The Romantic Egotist. The editor rejected the novel but encouraged him to submit more work. Later on he was assigned to Camp Sheridan outside of Montgomery, Alabama. Here, he met his future wife, Zelda Fitzgerald. He moved to New York to find a job in hopes of convincing Zelda to marry him once he had a substantial earning. Eventually he quit his job and began writing a novel. In 1920, when This Side of Paradise was published, it turned 24-year old Fitzgerald into an overnight celebrity. His newfound fame gave him the reputation of a playboy, who lived an extravagant lifestyle. In between publishing his first novel in 1920 and his second novel in 1922, he wrote a handful of short-stories: The Diamond as Big as the Ritz,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Camel’s Back” and “The Last of the Belles.”When The Beautiful and the Damned was published he finally regained his reputation as a serious writer. This novel helped coin the phrase the Jazz Age. Fitzgerald became a master satirists in the wealth, extravagance and ambition of the wealthy in the 1920s. He wrote: “It was an age of miracles…It was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire.”In the essence of changing his literary path, he moved to France. He published The Great Gatsby in 1925. Known as his finest literary accomplishment, The Great Gatsby was under appreciated during its publishing, it became a literary icon after the 1950s. The Great Gatsby beautifully depicts and exposes “The Roaring Twenties’” infamous dilemmas of materialism, vanity, and the distortion of the American dream. The Great Gatsby is one the most iconic novels in American literature, it has become a mandatory read across American high schools. After the completion of The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald’s life began to dissolve. His alcoholism progressed and he dealt with prolonged periods of writer’s block. His wife Zelda was admitted into a mental health clinic and suffered multiple breakdowns. From 1935-1937 years of alcoholism and depression followed Fitzgerald. In an attempt to revive his career, he became a screenwriter and freelance storywriter in Hollywood. Finally in 1939, Fitzgerald began working on what would be known as his last novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon. The novel’s manuscript was left incomplete. He died of a heart attack on December 21, 1940. Sadly, F. Scott Fitzgerald passed away with modest success during his life. He passed away convinced he was a failure. Fitzgerald gained his iconic, literary status posthumously.
