Nothing in your garden should look too polished. In that vein, it's best to use garden accessories that have a vintage feel, like a weathered pitchfork or an old galvanized steel watering can.

Article: 50 Year old Bottle Garden: Still going strong ~`*`~ Pictured is pensioner David Latimer (from Cranleigh, Surrey) with a bottle garden that planted 53 years ago. He watered it once - in 1972 - and the bottle has remained sealed ever since. The plant has succeeded in creating it's own miniature ecosystem, and has thrived without any outside intervention for over 50 years.
Miniature ecosystem has been thriving in an almost completely isolated state for 40 years being watered just once in that time. The original single spiderwort plant has grown & multiplied, putting out seedlings. With access to light, it continues to photosynthesize. Water builds up on inside of bottle & rains back down on the plants in a miniature version of the water cycle. Leaves die, fall off & rot at the bottom producing carbon dioxide & nutrients required for more plants to grow.
Amazing 53 Year Old Sealed Bottle Garden Hasn’t Been Watered in 40 Years! 53 years ago in 1960, David Latimer planted a bottle garden and only watered it once, and in 1972 and sealed it up. He periodically moves it so it can receive more light from a nearby window so it grows more evenly. The bottle garden is basically a completely self sufficient miniature ecosystem.
This bottle garden is a self-contained ecosystem and has not been opened to the outside world (save for sunlight passing through the glass) for more than 40 years! It produces its own oxygen, consumes carbon dioxide produced by rotting leaves and bacteria in the soil, even has its own water cycle.
