Although you know it when you see it, it's hard to accurately describe Memphis design without resorting to specific 1980s pop cultural references. It's Pee-Wee's Playhouse meets Miami Vice. It's Saved By The Bell plus Beetlejuice. And it's all coming back, in a very big way.

George Sowden moved to Milano in 1970 where he started working with Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti. In 1981, he was one of the co-founders[1] of the Memphis Group, the design movement that had a significant impact on design aesthetics in the eighties. The same year he founded his design studio, SowdenDesign, and has since collaborated with numerous world famous companies, such as Olivetti, Alessi, Bodum, Guzzini, Lorenz, Steelcase, Swatch, Memphis, and Pyrex.

The first Write Sketch &’s collection is called Super! and is characterized by the Postmodernist Italian graphic style. Super Collection is composed by 4 coloured fun and ironic notebooks, full of patterns and hectic and expressive geometries.

Sottsass was best known as the founder of the early 1980s Memphis collective. The Memphis Group offered bright, colourful, shocking pieces. The colours they used contrasted the dark blacks and browns of European furniture. It may look dated today but at the time it looked remarkable. Their main aim was to reinvigorate the Radical Design movement. The group intended to develop a new creative approach to design.
