Greystone park state hospital - It is truly a strange thing when a steam pipe bursts under an abandoned building in the dead of winter, but that’s what happened under the Clinic Building at Greystone Park State Hospital in 2007, a month before the building was knocked down. The steam congregated near the ceiling of the abandoned asylum infirmary, condensing on the pipes and dripping down in regular patterns, and creating these ice stalagmites.

Beautiful Abandoned Buildings - North Brother Island (New York, The United States) The now abandoned island is located between Manhattan and LaGuardia Airport.
Located in between Queens and the Bronx, 20 acre North Brother Island was in use by New York City from 1885 to 1963 as a hospital complex to quarantine and treat people suffering from smallpox and typhoid fever then a rehab center and a housing project for WWII vets. By 1963 things were falling apart on the island and it was abandoned. 50 years lat
North Brother Island, New York City--Believe it or not, there is an abandoned island in the middle of New York City. In the East River between Riker's Island and the Bronx you'll find North Brother Island, which is now a bird sanctuary. It was first inhabited in 1885 when a hospital was built there. Patients with smallpox were sent to the island to be quarantined and treated.

Photos: The Ruins of Detroit. A VERY neat collection of photos taken of abandoned buildings in Detroit. "Ruins are the visible symbols and landmarks of our societies and their changes, small pieces of history in suspension." I would love to have the book, but it's a little pricey. :)
ARTBOX Magazine: Detroit’s abandoned houses. I would love to have seen this one restored! It's a shame people abandon places like this and leave then to ruin.
William Livingstone House Constructed in 1893 in the once elegant Brush Park neighborhood, this home, designed by architect Albert Kahn, was moved from its original location several years ago by preservationists who hoped to maintain it. It was demolished 2012. | Photo series "Detroit's Beautiful, Horrible Decline" by Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, their website is marchandmeffre.com

2010 Photos: The Ruins of Detroit - I'm hoping that the beautiful Detroit that I remember makes a grand come back. Sadly, my recent visit to Detroit tells me that some of its gorgeous architecture is gone forever.
Parisian photographers Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre took a trip to Detroit to capture the urban decay of a once thriving city. In their book The Ruins of Detroit, Yves and Romain photograph abandoned buildings, offering a chilling look into a city in decline.

Carleton Island Villa, Carleton Island, New York, Thousand Island area of the St. Lawrence River. Built in 1894. Uninhabited for 60 years. Abandoned mansion.
I adore abandoned homes. This is the Carleton Island Villa, built in 1894. Today, after more than 60 years of neglect, the house stands nearly gutted by the elements, in need of a complete restoration. According to an architect who recently surveyed the site, the stone structure itself requires little work, but restoring the interiors to their Gilded Age glories would require a sizable fortune.

Abandoned Ferris Wheel - Taken by Kyle Telechan. It's from an abandoned amusement park called Lake Shawnee in West Virginia. Apparently there's some interesting (read: paranormal) history to the area, but the owner of the land sounds kinda mean/crazy. Read more here: http://www.pbase.com/kstuebin/hauntedamusementpark
