Photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher spent over 30 years taking photos of ceremonies, rituals and the daily life of African tribal peoples. These extraordinary images tell the story of the Dinka tribe in Sudan | #travel #photography #Africa
DINKA: Legendary Cattle Keepers of Sudan Photo by world-renowned photographers Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith (http://www.photokunst.com/photographer_detail.php?artist_id=2_id=43) Dinka children lavish endless care and affection on their animals; male youths are named after favored oxen in the hope that they will mature with the same strength and beauty.

In Sudan, each Dinka family shapes their cattle's horns in a different way, so they can look into a sea of animals and know which are theirs. The horns are cut when the bulls are young so they grow in a specific way. Living in harmony with their cattle, the Dinka people of Sudan have survived years of war only to find their culture on the brink of vanishing forever. Photo: Angela Fisher & Carol Beckwith

He is named after his favored ox, his Namesake Ox, in the hope he will mature with the same strength and beauty. He believes that he and his Namesake Ox are one. In the future this animal will accompany him everywhere, even when he is courting young girls. | ©Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith

I love Baobab trees. I saw some in Africa and their story is amazing. Volunteer Julie Smith took this picture at the Avenue of Baobabs in Madagascar in 2011.

Madagascar - those trees are beautiful but don't offer any shade - very different :) - info: Baobab trees, up to 800 years old, known locally as Renala (Malagasy for "mother of the forest"), are a legacy of the dense tropical forests that once thrived on Madagascar.

Avenue of Baobabs, Madagascar - The Avenue or Alley of the Baobabs is a prominent group of baobab trees lining the dirt road between Morondava and Belon'i Tsiribihina in the Menabe region in western Madagascar. Its striking landscape draws travelers from around the world, making it one of the most visited locations in the region. It has been a center of local conservation efforts, and was granted temporary protected status in July 2007 by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests, the first step toward making it Madagascar's first natural monument.

Ring-tailed lemurs in Madagascar are but one of many species of lemur found there. My most memorable experience is waking up to the sound of the Indri indri in Andasibe National Park. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kue1EBc9ZRk #madagascar #island #africa #reisjunk #travel #world #explore www.reisjunk.nl

Lemurs are primates native to the island of Madagascar, a large island of the south east coast of Africa. There are about 10 different species of lemurs inhabit the island where lemurs spend most of their time in trees. Lemurs are famous for their large, round eyes and reflective howling screams. Lemur also has a furry, pointy ears and a long tail, with lemurs are often compared to both monkeys and squirrels.

"The study results contribute to a growing body of research that shows genes in plants can have direct and indirect effects on other species in the ecosystem." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/10/141030133051.htm QUESTION: What do you think the implications of this kind of research are for the insertion of novel GMO plant genes into (and the resulting depletion of biodiversity in) our environments?
"The study results contribute to a growing body of research that shows genes in plants can have direct and indirect effects on other species in the ecosystem. This has important implications for the conservation of biodiversity, as the loss of endemics as a group might also represent the loss of novel ecological interactions. These results are particularly important in the context of climate change." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/10/141030133051.htm
