Bowls - Live Edge

10 Pins
Made by Carl Ford. 10/2011, Cherry, Milk Paint, 7-1/2" Wide, 3-1/2" Tall. After my 2011 class with Al Stirt, I got to thinking about the bowls I did in the class. They looked great on the outside but you see more of the inside then outside when they are sitting on a table. This is the first bowl where I tried two new things. 1. The rim is carved inside and out. 2. The coves cut on the inside mirror the beads cut on the outside of bowl.
Made by Carl Ford. 11/2011, Cherry, Milk Paint, 9" Wide, 3-1/2" Tall. I made a very similar bowl in black. It looked great. Thus I decided to try it in green.
Hand made by Carl Ford. 8/20213, Cherry, 11" Diameter, 2" Thick I did a series of these cherry bowls with a milk paint back in 2013. I really like this one. I like the rim. I like the ripples. Tavern green and black milk paint. The bowls were turned green. Milk painted and then allowed to dry. Thus the bowls distorted a little. They are not truly round and look a little wonky in person.

Made by Carl Ford. 2/2012, Cherry, 8" Tall, 8" Wide, 1-3/8" Thick. I discovered a new way to carve big bold craters between my lines of sun shine. Sold for $350 at the Saturday Night Banquet Live Auction at the AAW National Symposium in Phoenix Arizona.
Handmade by Carl Ford. 12/2011, Cherry, 9-1/2" Wide, 7-1/2" Tall, 1-1/4" Thick. Black Milk Paint on Cherry Wood is magic! This piece really suggests that "Is it Bronze or Wood" question. The back features a completely different lathe carved texture.
Made by Carl Ford. 2/2012, Cherry, 1-1/2" Thick, 7-3/4" Wide, 8" Tall. Off Center Sort Of Square Bowl, Cherry Wood, Black Milk Paint, Hand Carved Textures, 1 My motivation for this piece was I wanted to make something with spirals and big dots. Made by Carl Ford. 5/2010, Ash. Black vase that I made during my metal spinning phase in 2010. Ash vases with spun copper lids. The copper was spun over an ash wood mold to create the ripples in the lids. In my personal collection.
Made by Carl Ford. 10/2010, 5-1/2" Tall , 3-3/4" Diameter. Spun Copper, Ash with Black Gesso, Cherry Finial, This piece looks like a Cindy Drozda piece. But, It it was actually inspired by a piece I saw at a glass show. Getting the copper lid to fit inside of groove in the ash base was tricky. Because wood moves with the weather (changes in moisture, etc) and copper does not move.

Hand made by Carl Ford. 6/2014, 1" tall by 8" diameter. I made this carving techniques sampler in a 6/2014 class with Dixie Biggs at "Peter's Valley Craft Center" in Layton NJ. I enjoyed the class. Dixie is a great teacher. I learned in this class that making samplers is a great idea! It allows you to bring home all the ideas and techniques you learned in a class. I also learned that Dixie Biggs style carving is not for me. It takes to long. I like Big, Bold, instant gratification.
Hand made by Carl Ford. 8/2016, 1-1/2 tall by 9-1/2" diameter. I made this Vesery techniques sampler in a 8/2016 class with Jacques Vesery at the "Center for Furniture Craftsmanship" in Rockport Maine. You can see in the photos that gold leaf got screwed up. I was in to much of a hurry in class. You live and learn. That is why we take classes.
Hand made by Carl Ford. 6/2018, 1-1/4" tall by 8" diameter. This sampler explores carving patterns, filled with Milk Paint colors and top coated with Black Block Printing Ink. I made this sampler in a 6/2018 class with John Jordan and Clay Foster at Tennessee Tech Appalachian Center for Crafts near Nashville Tennessee. It was a great class. I learned how to use Block Printing Ink from Clay Foster.
