1887-1889 French Ball gown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York - Because a lot of these clothes were bespoke, they can reveal something of the proportions of the people who wore them. This gown's owner, with corseting, seems to have had an incredibly waspish waist - and she flaunted it!
