Frank Sinatra was a big activist in the civil rights movement, refusing to stay at hotels that didn't allow "blacks". Even using his mafia ties to help get labor unions behind JFK because he knew they shared the same opinions on equal rights.
Millie and Christine McCoy (1851-1912) were conjoined twins born into slavery. They and their mother were sold to a showman, Joseph Smith. Smith and his wife educated the girls; they eventually could speak five languages, dance, play music, and sing. They were known as 'The Two Headed Nightingale'. In the 1880s they retired and purchased a small farm. Millie died of tuberculosis at age 61, with Christine following hours later. They remain one of the oldest-lived set of conjoined twins.
Rosa Lee Ingram & her 2 sons received the death penalty in 1948 for murdering a white landowner in rural Georgia. Civil Right activist represented them as an example of the emerging Cold War Politics. In 1947 Ms Ingram was angrily approached by John Stratford about livestock that roamed onto his property. Mr Stratford sexually attacked her. As she fought him off her teenage sons stuck him with farm equipment. Their case was appealed & their sentences were reduced to life in prison.

And, in-case anyone try to explain this away by saying that Black figures appeared there because of slavery, would be a lie. Who would make slaves their Patron Saint? Or to use them as emblems on coats of arms, flags, etc...?? They don't appear in the Americas, or the Caribbean, places where vast more Black slaves were kept.
