Waatlemoen Konfyt (Watermelon Jam)

It's been a while since I posted a good recipe and I recently made some Waatlemoen Konfyt, so I figured that it would be a good thing to share. This recipe requires quite a bit of waiting around - so plan to make this over a day or two, when you've got other things on the go (but not too much). Last year some time (or maybe it was even the year before that) I had a watermelon and once I'd finished eating the yummy inside goodness, I remembered about a jam I'd heard about - Waatelmoen Konfyt…

How To Take Pictures Of The Moon

This weekend was a good one. I finally found time to go shopping for a tripod and found one that I really liked (yay!). Then I had to wait until night time so that I could test out my tripod and finally figure out how to take pictures of the moon! I spent some time playing around with different settings and totally by accident finally found a combination that worked! You can take a look at the pictures below, I've included the settings that I used to take each shot so that you can test out…

Hot Cross Bun Recipe

Easter weekend was an incredibly chilled affair. Frosty and I didn't have too many plans and we were able to spend a lot of time at home just chilling and enjoying being on holiday. One evening, we decided to get into the Easter spirit and bake some hot cross buns. Frosty searched a recipe, we popped into the shops to get the ingredients and then we began to bake. The only problem was, Frosty we didn't read the recipe the whole way through. After mixing together the basic dough mixture, we…

Flourless Chocolate Lovers Treat

Chocolate. Yum. I was given a Woman&Home, Pick 'n Pay recipe booklet by a friend a few weeks ago. Last weekend I decided to test out this awesome recipe for a "chocolate soufflé" type dessert since Frosty was around and we were too busy to bake brownies to send back to Cape Town with him. Ingredients 60 g 70% dark chocolate 50 g butter or marge (guess which one I used) 2 large eggs, separated 50 g white sugar Chocolate on top of egg yolk-sugar mix on top of whipped egg whites - ready for a…

Baby, When The Lights Go Out

I read an article the other day on things to do during loadshedding, which I thought was a grand idea! For those who aren't in South Africa, you may not be aware that we are going through some pretty hectic loadshedding. Some places have it worse than others*, but recently we've been having routine power cuts to certain areas all over the country on a regular basis so that our power distributor can perform maintenance. We could get into a whole political argument, point fingers and play the…

Night Time Photography

Over Christmas and New Year, I was away at Balloch and I spent some of the time learning a bit more about my camera and how the different settings interact. I had such fun doing this and on some of the evenings I experimented with night photography - here are some of my favourite night pictures that I have taken straight from my camera*. Trees at night with a long exposure, large aperture, relatively high ISO and a flash. Mountains with clouds at Balloch. A long exposure with high ISO and…

How To Build A Self-Watering Flower System

How To Build A Self-Watering Flower System

Remember when I told you I was growing Basil (along with some other herbs)? Well, so far so good, they're all looking healthy and I have even managed to get a jar or two of home made pesto out of my basil which has been delicious! Just before we went on holiday, Frosty and I decided to build our own "self-watering" plant system in order to (hopefully) to keep our plants from dying while we were away. Granted, the first attempt culminated in a completely imploded water container (the plastic…

Instagram Challenge

So, Indie Berries (one of my favourite bloggers) has started a creative challenge that I'm taking part in on Instagram. It's under the hashtag #myoriginalawesomeness and people have been creating some amazing stuff! What's even cooler is that one of my creations get a mention on one of her blog posts - scroll to the bottom and look for the first "Awesome!" link! :) This is how the challenge works: every day Indie Berries is posting a prompt on Instagram along with suggestions on how you can…

A Visit To Darling

A few weekends ago, we went to Darling with Frosty's family and we had such a lovely weekend away. We drank some wine, went to Evita se Perron where we saw the show Adapt or Fly and we also took a bit of a drive to see the last of the Namaqualand flowers (I think it was the Waylands farm that we drove around- thank you Waylands!). In other news, Engineering In Style have posted my second guest post on their blog, so you can click here to go and take a look to find out more on How and Why I…

Camping At Kogel Bay

Last weekend, a bunch of us camped for a night a Kogel Bay, which is just past Gordon's Bay. Half our group met at our house on Saturday morning, we packed up two cars and set off for our camp site. When we arrived, it was a little windy blowing gales. So we set up all our camping stuff in the wind and just as we were finishing off, our neighbours decided to start their generator so that they could play some pretty average music (loud enough to drown out the generator!) and continue with…

Orange Kloof Tented Camps

On Saturday I was invited to spend the night away with some friends in the Orange Kloof Tented Camps. This place is a little gem that hardly anyone knows about, but is definitely worth the visit! It's run by SanParks and is part of the 5 day Hoeriekwaggo trail. I found it appealing because it's a 20 minute drive from home and it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. One member of our group brought a hula-hoop with LEDs inside it, here are some of the results of some night time pics…

The Making And Inspiration Of My Under The Sea Paintings

Near the end of 2012, I was staying in Durban and saw the paintings below at the hotel that I was staying at (for the life of me I can't remember the name of the hotel). I loved the boldness and brightness of the colours in these paintings as decided at some stage in the future to try something similar for myself. I stupidly didn't take a note of the artist either - so if you painted these, or know who did, please let me know so I can credit them! Inspiration for my own "Under The Sea"…
