First Grade Math Journal through the Year!
It's here! I am so excited that my year long math journal is finally finished, edited, and ready to go! This math journal is packed with problem solving and scaffolds for the year! The rigor increases as the math journal progress through the school year. Just print double sided, staple, and watch your mathematicians' skills sky rocket! Check it out here or by clicking on any of the pictures!! Problem solving is a crucial skill for all students to have, even outside of mathematics. These journals will help your students learn to solve mathematical problems, solve the problems in different ways, and understand the deep meaning of the skills they are being taught. Plus, they are fun! I always have my students share their math journals with the class. This allows for students to be able to see how others are working on the same problem. It is important to look at different ways to solve one problem. It also allows students to practice speaking to an audience and explain their work. I have created this freebie rubric to go along with the math journals! It is a super easy way to assess your students' progress. I like to staple a rubric onto a random problem throughout the week. It is so amazing to see the progress through the year! Click here or the picture to download for FREE!! Back to the math journals: There is a total of six units, which are also sold separately. First Grade Math Journal Unit 1: Addition and Subtraction to 10 First Grade Math Journal Unit 2: Addition and Subtraction to 20 First Grade Math Journal Unit 3: Measurement First Grade Math Journal Unit 4:Place Value and Addition & Subtraction to 40 First Grade Math Journal Unit 5: Shapes and Fractions First Grade Math Journal Unit 6: Comparison, Place Value, and Addition & Subtraction Be sure to follow me on Facebook for freebies and giveaways!! Guided Math Made Easy
Hey friends! We just finished week 5! Can't believe it's already half way through the first grading period! My life has been so full of meetings, planning, meetings, trainings, meetings..did I say MEETINGS?!? I am certainly glad the weekend is here :) This week, I kicked off formal data collection in guided math. I used my Guided Math Binder to document all of my assessments and observations. This way I could easily jot my notes down and form my groups based on the data. I'm not the most organized person so this is SO helpful for me. I just separated my data by skill or SOL (our standards in VA). It was so helpful come conference time to when I was asked directly how a student was doing on a specific skill. I know it's another dreadful binder, but it's been such a help this year! Implementing Guided Math We started our guided math routine off very simple. I introduced our guided math routing with Reagan's Guided Math Posters. We discussed the word stamina and how we were building up to be bale to work for longer periods of time. I have four tables in my classroom. Each table got a hands on activity to complete for just 8 minutes. Each activity was introduced to the entire group. I used very simple activities. I wanted my students to get the hang on working in a group with activities that they could pretty much do on their own. We started off with math tubs filled with Skip Counting Puzzles, Place Value Work Mats, Math Interactive Notebook, and Math Literacy. These activities are easy to prepare and simple for the kiddos to pick up to get the hang of working in groups. I allowed the kids to work in 8 minute rotations, teaching them that when the timer goes off, we began to clean up. This worked SO well for my kiddos. They enjoyed fun, engaging activities that were not so much prep work. It was a teacher lifesaver :) Each week, we've built up our time and are now completing 13 minute rotations. I've begun to pull my students that need a little extra help with the skill we are working on. The great thing about guided math, is that we will continue working on previously taught skills for the year. Our first SOL or objective was counting to 50. We used these interactive notebook pages to practice counting, place value and skip counting. You can check out this notebook right here! AND It's on SALE :) Happy Teaching!

I hope that this blog inspires you to start using interactive notebooks with your students. Here are some things to think about when you get started... First, you need to decide what type of notebook you will be using. I went with a Five Subject Notebook (because I believe I need one that large). Some people prefer Marble Composition Pads (because it is pretty much impossible to tear or lose pages from it). Next, figure out what you want to include in your notebook (besides notes, problems, and foldables). Some absolute musts (in my humble opinion) include: Table of Contents one of the major benefits of using an interactive notebook is that it helps keep your students more organized. Every page in the notebook is numbered, so the table of contents makes it easy to quickly locate specific topics. (I also decided to colorcode my Table of Contents by unit. Of course, I decided this after I already started so my first entries in the Table of Contents are random colors.) Cover/Cover Page (designed by the student) Interactive Notebook Rubric Interactive Notebook Guidelines I also decided to include a grade sheet for each marking period and my grading policy. Here is what I have so far: My Cover Page (I apologize...I am no artist!): My Guidelines: You can get a copy at my TeachersPayTeachers store. My Rubric: I found this free rubric here! My Grading Policy: My Grade Logs (There is one for each marking period, for a total of four pages): You can download this from my TeachersPayTeachers Store. My Table of Contents: I used three pages for my Table of Contents. It may be more than needed, but better to be safe than sorry! A few other things to keep in mind: Don't let your students use permanent marker in their notebooks. It will bleed through the pages. (Washable markers have been working just fine for me.) Glue sticks worked great for glueing everything into the notebook. White glue is a little messy. Okay, you're ready! Go out, get a notebook, some markers, a glue stick and get started today!

I have been using interactive notebooks in reading, language and math this year. I love them and my students are always excited to add a new page. I sometimes catch them reading through these journals on their snack break. That makes a teacher smile! My favorite thing to have the kids put in their journal are flaps. They are super simple to prep and add to the journal and provide lots of space for students to record definitions and examples. Here is a look in our language notebook... Each flap is aligned to the 3rd Grade Common Core standards and has a student friendly I can statement on it. Winner of: PAL Award Although Matty's art teacher has warned him that too much glue never dries, Matty loves glue. After all, he and his dad make oodles of glue projects at home. One day during art class, Matty finds the fullest bottles of glue, and the fun begins. With a squeeze and a plop, Matty pours a lake of glue before bellyflopping right in the middle and finds himself stuck to the desk.

Any ways, The book I absolutely love to read to my kiddos when we go back to school is Too Much Glue written by Jason Lefebvre. How many of you have had the lovely words screamed out in class, Mrs or Mr. ________ I have too much glue! How many have said remember boys and girls just a drop not a lot! This book is about a young man who loves glue. This book takes place in the art room, where just like many classroom teachers, the art teacher has given the warning of using too much glue. Well, Matty loves glue and he did not listen to her warning. The results are hilarious. The kids love reading and seeing what happens to Matty!
