Franz Kline ~ Henry H II ~ 1959 ●彡 Kline was an American painter mainly associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement centered around New York in the 1940s and 1950s. He used stark tonal contrasts and variations of scale to explore gestural movement.

1958 Untitled. Franz Kline (1910-1962) was associated with abstract expressionist movement centered around NYC in the 40s &1950s. He was labeled an "action painter" because of his seemingly spontaneous and intense style, focusing less, or not at all, on figures or imagery, but on the actual brush strokes and use of canvas. For most of Kline's work, however, he would prepare many draft sketches—notably, commonly on refuse telephone book pages—before going to make his "spontaneous" work.

Jasper John, Barnettnewman
Barnett Newman, Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue I; It was dedicated to Jasper Johns || Series of 4 large-scale paintings by Barnett Newman painted between 1966-70. Two of them have been the subject of vandalistic attacks in musea. Series' name was a reference to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the play by Edward Albee (premiere in '62, which was in itself a reference to Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?, the 1933 song immortalized in Disney cartoons)

American painter Jackson Pollock. His work is characterized by the ground-breaking dripping technique and the use of a variety of objects other than a paint brush. Pollock is considered the most influential of all artists in the abstract expressionist movement. Like many artists,he had his own demons. August 11, 1956, driving his Oldsmobile convertible with two companions, and under the influence of alcohol. They crashed in a single-car accident, which killed Pollock and one of his passengers.
Jackson Pollock, 1949 By Martha Holmes LIFE's editors had heard that something weird and new—and perhaps important—was happening on Long Island, so Martha Holmes traveled to meet with the artist Jackson Pollock. Holmes recorded her day, including a session in the studio during which Pollock demonstrated his avant-garde technique by applying house paint and sand to a canvas that would become known as "Number 1, 1949." Holmes's pictures made the abstract expressionist famous when they graced the August 8 article, "Jackson Pollock: Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?"

"Yellow, Cherry, Orange", by Mark Rothko (1947) "if all you see is color relationships, you are missing the point" Rothko was a crazy and to him art was a religion and a way of life. Good art was a virtue and bad art was a sin. He and his wife made a "cathedral" called the Rothko chapel. check it out.
