Black velvet evening coat
c. 1912 With beaded ornamentation, this coat was designed by the couture House of Worth in Paris. It too was worn by Ethel Sanford. The coat displays both the Orientalism and Art Deco influences popular at the time. It hugs the body, wrapping around in a kimono-like garment, fastened beneath a heavily beaded tassel. The founder of the House of Worth, Charles Worth, died in 1895, but the influential design house continued under his two sons, Gaston-Lucien and Jean-Philippe. It flourished…
