ARCHITECTURE – Chateau de Moulbaix near Ath, Belgium. Built in 1860, it has been abandoned for about 4 years and is supposed to be for sale. The inside looks like the people just left yesterday, leaving everything behind for some reason.
On my bucket list .....to tour an actual castle

Castles: Himeji Castle, considered the largest and most often visited of Japan’s castles. Seen as the finest surviving example of 17th century architecture in Japan. It is composed of a network of 83 buildings. Commonly known as the ‘White Egret Castle’ due to the exceptionally brightly painted white exterior, dates to 1333. Despite heavy WWII bombardment of the area, and natural destructive forces (I.e.) it remains unscathed to this day, a wonderful reminder of times long gone, Japan🏰

Borgund Stave Church in Borgund, Norway The church was built in the early 13th century and is the best preserved medieval stave church. A stave church is a wooden church made with a type of post and beam construction. Almost all surviving stave churches are in Norway. One survives in Sweden and one was moved to what is now Poland. A similar, Anglo-Saxon palisade church survives in England.

This is the Borgund Stave Church in Borgund, Norway The church was built in the late 12 or early 13th century and is the best preserved medieval stave church. A stave church is a wooden church made with a type of post and beam construction. Almost all surviving stave churches are in Norway. One survives in Sweden and one was moved to what is now Poland. A similar, Anglo-Saxon palisade church survive in England. Although only a few of these churches remain, they were, at one time fairly common throughout northern Europe. Because masonry and other stone work survives better than construction in wood, it easy for modern viewers to loose sight of the reality that much medieval architecture was actually in made of perishable materials.
Borgund Stave Church I had a vivid dream of visiting a place just like this. I must get here!
Borgund Stave Church, Lærdal, Norway (Image Credits: Wikipedia) Stave churches may have been very usual all over medieval northwestern Europe but now you can only find them in Norway. Well ok, there is one one in Sweden, but nowhere else. Borgund stave church located in Borgund, Lærdal, Norway is the best preserved of Norway’s 28 extant stave churches. This wooden church, probably built in the end of the 12th century, has not changed structure or had a major reconstruction since the date it was built. Interesting fact: the church is also featured as a Wonder for the Viking civilization in the video game Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.

Maison de Verre by Pierre Chareau, Paris. “For architects it represents the road not taken: a lyrical machine whose theatricality is the antithesis of the dry functionalist aesthetic that reigned through much of the 20th century.” - Nicolai Ousaroff (The New York Times, “The Best House in Paris,” 8/29/07)

Designed by Wallace K. Harrison, the new sanctuary was dedicated in March 1958. Its shape has been likened to that of a fish- a symbol used in early Christianity. The fish shape is apparent both in the profile and in the floor plan of the structure. Enhancing the unique shape of the church are the outstanding stained glass windows in the sanctuary, containing more than 20,000 pieces of faceted glass and depicting the story of the Crucifixion and of the resurrection; and the 32 foot high cross faced with wood from the Canterbury Cathedral in England, which dominates the Chancel.

Cactus Skyscraper: Qatar’s Eco-friendly Structure

Minister of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture (MMAA) in Qatar is getting a brand new office building that takes the form of a towering cactus. Designed by Bangkok-based Aesthetics Architects, the modern office and adjoining botanical dome take cues from cacti and the way that they successfully survive in hot, dry environments.
Entirely fitting for the hot desert climate of Qatar, the new office for the Minister of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture resembles a giant cactus sprouting from the sand. But the inspiration goes far beyond mere looks. Design team Aesthetics Architects has covered the building in sun shades that can open to let in air and light and close to keep out the heat, mimicking the natural water-retaining biological system of cacti.
21st Century Architecture: Modern Architecture in the Middle East - New and Proposed
This cactus building was designed to be built in Qatar. It applies biomimicry, as suggested by the name, it has skin similar to that of a cactus on its facade. It also has small shades that open and close depending on the strength of the sun, coming from the middle east I understand how useful this could be.#Expo2015 | Sustainability
