I want to do this hike! Thor's Well, Cape Perpetua, Oregon, Usa. Photo by Nathaniel Reinheart via Flicker.
Water Fountain, Thor Well, Pacific Ocean, Oregon Coast, Central Oregon, Layers Perpetual, Winter Storms, Roads Trips, Native American
"Thor’s Well is part of Cape Perpetua, a typical Pacific Northwest headland – a forested area of land on the central Oregon Coast, surrounded by water on three sides. Thor’s Well is also often simply called the Spouting Horn. It is essentially a huge salt water fountain operated by the Pacific Ocean's power. This natural spectacle is at its best when it’s the most dangerous to watch – at high tide or during winter storms. Thor’s Well can be accessed from the north side of Cook’s Chasm but there are sharp rocks everywhere and the danger of a strong surge sweeping brave visitors right up is high. For photographers, the area’s a delight, especially at sunset, yet not many know about the place or dare stay long enough to set up their tripod. We’ve found a few who did and who have come back with stunning results. Here’s what photographer Darren White has to say about the dangers of the place:“The big waves come in like you see in the distance, they fill the hole with water and whoosh, it flies out of there... not every wave does this, it’s a matter of timing and wave size. I would guess this hole is about 20 feet deep and anyone who were to fall in would never EVER survive.” Photographer Chris Mullins agrees about the dangers and says about capturing his shot here:“This is probably the most dangerous picture I've taken. The waves hit the rocks pretty hard, and every once in a while a big wave would come through. If a wave hit hard, it would (at least) knock you over and into all these very sharp rocks. It's not obvious, but I'm about 50 yards from the shore here, scampering out on the rocks. The rocks are sharp, so traction is good... but still to be careful I had to watch for waves and scamper back as needed.” The calm of the area and the depth of the hole can be quite deceptive. So deceptive, in fact, that many visitors would walk up too close before potentially being sucked in..." -http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/nature/news-amazing-images-thor’s-well-pacific-gate-underworld?... Along the Cape Perpetua coastline there are several unique features as well. The Devil’s Churn is a long crack in the coastal rock that fills with each ocean wave, occasionally exploding as incoming and outgoing waves collide. The Spouting Horn at Cook's Chasm and the Thor's Well on the plateau nearby are both a salt water fountain driven by the power of the ocean tide. Devil’s Churn, Spouting Horn and Thor's Well are popular with visitors; however, all three can be dangerous especially at high tide and during winter storms. Cape Perpetua is a large forested headland on the central Oregon Coast which projects into the Pacific Ocean. The land is managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the Siuslaw National Forest. Cape Perpetua is located about 2 miles (3 km) south of Yachats, Oregon along U.S. Route 101. It is a typical Pacific Northwest headland, forming a high steep bluff above the ocean. At its highest point, Cape Perpetua rises to over 800 feet (240 m) above sea level. From its crest, an observer can see 70 miles (110 km) of Oregon coastline and as far as 37 miles (60 km) out to sea on a clear day. For at least 6,000 years Native Americans hunted for mussels, crabs, sea urchins, and clams along the coast near Cape Perpetua. Evidence of their lives can still be found in the huge piles of discarded mussel shells that lie along the shore near the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center.
How is it I have never heard of Thor's Well on the Oregon Coast before? Road trip time!

My dad used to go up this mountain as a child. I know it looks cold, but it usually isn't this white or snowed in. I hope that we get to see sights together. I've seen so many and yet so few in the whole measure of such beautiful sights and I want you too see them too.

Called “Terrible Tilly” because of the extreme engineering required to get this lighthouse perched on a rocky island here in the rough Pacific, this lighthouse is 1.2 miles from shore. The one of the best viewpoint of the Tillamook Rock lighthouse is from Ecola State Park in Oregon.

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, Cannon Beach Oregon - my favorite place ever! I can't wait to go to the Oregon Coast again!!
Tillamook Rock House
Tillamook Rock Light is a deactivated lighthouse on the Oregon Coast of the United States. It is located approximately 1.2 miles (1.9 km) offshore from Tillamook Head, and 20 miles (32 km) south of the Columbia River, situated on less than an acre of basalt rock in the Pacific Ocean. The construction of the lighthouse was commissioned in 1878 by the United States Congress, and began in 1880. The construction took more than 500 days to finish, with its completion in January 1881. In early January 1881, when the lighthouse was near completion, the barque Lupatia was wrecked near the rock during inclement weather and sank, killing all 16 crew members. The Light was officially lit on January 21, 1881. At the time, it was the most expensive West Coast lighthouse ever built. Due to the erratic weather conditions, and the dangerous commute for both keepers and suppliers, the lighthouse was nicknamed "Terrible Tilly". Over the years, storms have damaged the lighthouse, shattered the lens, and eroded the rock. It was decommissioned in 1957, and has since been sold to private owners. It is now an unofficial columbarium, and is privately owned. The light is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. It is visible from the coastal cities of Seaside, Cannon Beach, as well as from Ecola State Park.

Mt. Hood (Oregon) One word: BEAUTIFUL
Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe, is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon. It was formed by a subduction zone and rests in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located about 50 miles (80 km) east-southeast of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence.
