Colette (28 January 1873 – 3 August 1954) was a French novelist who was as famous for her free (and therefore scandalous) life style as for her writing. She is best known for her novel Gigi, that was made into a Broadway play and a highly successful Hollywood motion picture of the same name, starring Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan and Maurice Chevalier. A controversial figure throughout her life, Colette flaunted her lesbian affairs.

Things I didn't know - Group of women having a smoke, gelatin silver print, c. 1896 -- One of the most feared of all London's street gangs in the late 1880's was a group of female toughs known as the Clockwork Oranges. They would later inspire Anthony Burgess' most notorious novel.
