Winter Wonderland

I've been dreaming of how I could make this soap since we did the Landscape Challenge -- it's the flip side of my neon-bright ocean sunset: I made a number of versions of it before settling on this particular design, which I'll also try to photograph and post as a follow-up. This isn't all of them, as I had to make enough bars to participate in the soap swap. Can you figure out how I made it? If you guessed that it's a layered and shaped soap sculpture, then you're right! On the left is the…

Confetti Soap

This month's soap challenge is Sculpted Layers, which is based on my Winter Wonderland soap*. I'm teaching it, so I'm not competing, but I thought folks might want to see how I use left-over soap. For the sunrise soap I made, I just dumped the excess batter into individual bar molds for my family to use later. sunrise soap made with natural colorants and essential oils. The hills have faded from dark green at cutting to almost uncolored, despite my having used 4 T/ppo of spirulina. Would…

Spin Swirl

It's official -- I love, love, love the spin swirl! I first saw it on YouTube last year, and tried my hand at it in another challenge, but the results wren't impressive. And my first two attempts this time weren't much better. But I really like how my third try turned out. I had been planning another go after I poured this one, as the colors seemed dim, the swirls patterns murky, and the tops very unimpressive. But the colors morphed back, and when I cut it open everything was bright and…

For those who are seriously into soap making, the concept of soap molds is an interesting one. What you need to understand is that when it comes to soap molds, there are so many options that are present. Spring Wreath with a Butterfly Flambe

Yes, I know it's not spring yet. In fact it won't be spring until March 20, which is months away. But that didn't stop me from making a new wreath for my front door -- in shades of pink and purple -- to put up when we took down all our holiday decorations yesterday. Here's what part of it looks like up close: I made a palette from some of the colors: And generated this image from the palette: This inspired me for the next soap challenge, the Butterfly Swirl. The wet, glittery soap looked and…

Yinly & Yanglish

After taking a few months off, I'm back... My inspiration for the Embracing Opposites challenge was an abstract yin yang. Not literally, of course; just conceptually. It came out pretty cool looking, but I wish it wasn't so cloudy today, as the pictures are washed out and blurrier than I'd like. :( We're heading out of town, though, so I'm out of time. I think they look better when tipped on their side, but this shows how they came together more clearly (i.e., using a divided mold), and…

Outer space spoon swirl soap by Claudia Goat Milk Soap, Cold Process Soap, Soap Recipes, Handmade Soaps, Soap Making, Swirls, Lip Balm, Nom Nom, Spoon

The Final Frontier

Another soap challenge, and another awesome technique to learn! I was skeptical of this one, as I thought it was the lowly spoon-plop. But no, it's the spoon swirl, which turns out to be very useful! As soon as I saw Amy's video, I knew exactly what I wanted to make. If you've seen any of my previous posts, you know I'm a bit obsessed with trying to make things like clouds and outer space in soap. Well, now I've seen how to make clouds, so time for space! The trick for space seemed to be to…

Ugly Xmas Sweater Scented with a combination of Autumn Wreath and Cinnamon fragrance oils, this one made our whole house smell like Christmas: I had originally hoped to use Christmas Cabin as my fragrance oil, but it turned the soap a very unappealing salmon color. I was going for fun ugly, not fugly. For colors I did a super-saturated Soapberry red mixed with Red Lake #30, and Soapberry green mixed with hydrated green oxide in a light TD base. I made up some small bars in red and green the…

Rusted Soap

I have never once been mistaken as someone for whom less is more. It doesn't even make sense mathematically. So it wasn't that much of a surprise when Amy said my Easter-inspired soaps weren't exactly rustic enough for this month's Rustic Soap challenge. I had been thinking: it's an egg. Like on a farm. Farms are rustic, right? And I'd shaped these by hand, like without a mold. Isn't that rustic? Hmmmm. I tried a few more in what I thought were earth tones, but my family took one look and…
