Poetry explication is a close reading of a poem along with an analysis. After examining all the pieces of the poem in order to understand its meaning, students will be able to write either a full essay or a well-organized paragraph to explain all of the relationships between the parts found in the poem. The example used in this Power Point is Langston Hughes' poem, "Mother to Son." The procedures/worksheet provided can be used to explicate any piece of poetry.
