Exit Ticket - great idea! Use a dry erase board with the question. Have students line up and whisper answer to teacher on the way to lunch! No paper! I like it better as the students enter the room from after lunch - it would help to calm them down quickly and help avoid all the talking before getting to their chair.
Using a dry erase board your "exit" question. Great idea!

What if? To start the year to introduce how to be self managers when the teacher is working with small groups. Would also be a great mini-writing activity/prompt to elicit silliness and creativity while ending with a simple daily solution. Great way to lead a staff development piece on setting expectations to support year long classroom management.
The "What if?" Anchor Chart has arrived just in time for school. Brainstorm all of the reasons why students might need to interrupt their teachers. Record solutions to their problems. You CAN have uninterrupted small group learning in your classroom. Plus have fun listening to all of their reasons. Validating their reasons is the first step to problem-solving solutions. This is a quick beginning of the year activity that I usually have my students do as they come into the classroom on the first day of school. Students color in and decorate the number three and then fill in the blanks to share their feelings about their new grade. These make a good beginning of the year display for open house. There is third grade and second grade sheet attached to this file. Visit my blog: firstname.lastname@example.org to see how I use these in my classroom.

ABC Countdown I know technically it's not a countdown, but this is something fun our whole Kindergarten team does to countdown to the end of the school year! I can't believe I waited until now to blog about it (since the countdown has already started) but here it is anyway! Let me know if you have any questions about any of the days. This is what it looks like:

End of Year Activity I will definitely be doing this year! Each student writes one word that describes each of their classmates. Teacher then takes words and makes a word cloud as a gift for students.

End of Year Activity: I did this at the end of the year. I made a worksheet with each student's name and had the students write one positive word to describe their classmates. Then I took the description and made a word cloud in the shape of our school mascot using tagxedo and gave it to each student.

The Bandaid Lesson - after this your students will stop saying, "That's not fair!!!" - Saylor's Log: Differentiation
I absolutely love this lesson! The Bandaid Lesson explains differentiation to students on the first day of school. Each student comes up to the teacher and tells her a pretend "boo boo" that they have. They are allowed to be creative. However, the teacher places a band aid on every student in the same place. Once everyone has gone, the teacher explains that everyone is different and she will help everyone learn differently.
**The Bandaid Lesson** Lesson to explain differentiation. This program would focus on responding to the idea of "This is not fair." It allows students to think about "fair" in a new light. The article (click on the picture) is created for K-12, so one would only need to take the basis of the program and edit it to your individual hall or campus.
Saylor's Log: Differentiation. Love this bandaid lesson for teaching kids what it means to differentiate!

Name Map-This is a great getting to know you activity. The teacher creates one and shares it with the class. The teacher then allows the students to create their own "name map". The middle symbol represents them and then they have other symbols branching off of the center symbol that represent who they are and their interests. It also goes well after reading Chrysanthemum.

A name map is a terrific way to introduce "mapping" to students. It is also a nice icebreaker for the first week of school and a great way to get to know the students that will be in your class for the year. The completed activity makes a wonderful back to school bulletin board too! The teacher can do a personal one, so that there is a sample to show the students, as well as a means for them to get to know their new teacher. Having each child share their map will help them feel more comfortable.
