Origins of Glassmaking

Origins of Glassmaking / See works in the Museum’s collection that illustrate the ingenuity of the earliest glassmakers, who used a variety of techniques to shape and decorate glass objects, including vessels, jewelry, inlays, and sculpture.

Roman Glass / The Romans are credited with the discovery of glassblowing and also created some of the most lavish luxury glass ever made. The Corning Museum’s collection encompasses rare and sumptuous examples of ancient cage cups, mosaic, cameo, and gold glass.

Islamic Glass / Glassmakers in the Islamic world through the seventh century A.D. made great achievements in new methods for ornamenting glass. These works in the Museum’s collection demonstrate the cutting, enameling, gilding, and staining techniques used in the Byzantine Empire.

Medieval Glass / The phrase “medieval glass” evokes images of stained glass windows. But there was another world of medieval glass: objects made for daily use. The glass vessels and objects in this collection range from highly decorated drinking vessels to church reliquaries—highlighting the many uses of glass in medieval society, and the significance of the material to local economies, religious ceremonies and scientific developments.

Renaissance Glass

Renaissance Glass / During the Renaissance (1300-1700) glassmaking took place in rural glasshouses all over Europe. Glass was produced for daily use, and luxury glassmaking was revived, especially in Venice, where colorless and colored glass was crafted on the nearby island of Murano.

Baroque Glass / Baroque glassmaking was in part characterized by the production of Humpen (large vessels with a lid), especially in German and Bohemian glasshouses. Many of these objects have decorative scenes or coats of arms painted in enamel on the surface.

19th-Century European Glass

19th-Century European Glass / This collection of objects showcases the elegant cutting and engraving techniques that dominated glassmaking in Europe in the 19th Century.

Asian Glass / The Corning Museum has collections of carved ceremonial objects from Qing Dynasty China, blown and cut vessels from Edo period Japan, beaded containers from Indonesia and luxury glassware from India, among other fine examples of Asian glass production.

American Glass / Glassmaking was America’s first industry, and with the invention of pressed glass in the 1820s, American-made glassware became affordable to middle-class households. This collection showcases many of the great American glass manufacturers from the 18th century until about 1920.

Crystal City Glass

Crystal City Glass / In 1868, glassmaking came to Corning, NY. The city quickly became world-renowned as the "Crystal City," for the brilliant cut glass produced there. Steuben Glass and Pyrex are among the innovations created in Corning, which is still a glassmaking hub today. Modern Glass / The Museum’s collection of modern glass (1900-1990) features works that highlight the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and American Studio Glass movements, including international decorative arts, design objects, stained glass, and sculptures.

Contemporary Glass

Contemporary Glass / This collection showcases vessels, objects, sculptures, and installations made by international artists over the past 25 years, and demonstrates the different ways glass is used as a medium for contemporary art.

These books are all available at the Rakow Research Library of the Corning Museum of Glass. The library is open Sunday–Saturday, 9am–5pm.

Ennion and His Legacy: Mold-Blown Glass from Ancient Rome is on view at The Corning Museum of Glass from May 16, 2015 to January 4, 2016.

René Lalique: Enchanted by Glass

René Lalique: Enchanted by Glass / As a successful jeweler René Lalique (French, 1860–1945) experimented with glass in his designs, which eventually led to a career in which he fully embraced the material. His aesthetic choices informed the styles of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in France, and the objects he created have become iconic reflections of these periods.
