Moon in Scorpio Water sign Scorpio is considered to be the 2nd most fruitful of the zodiac. Possessing many of the traits of Cancer, Scorpio is said to be a good sign in which to plant berries. Further to this, Scorpio is considered to be the ideal time for preserving, so get the relish and jam on the go when the moon is in Scorpio.

Moon in Virgo. Barren and moist, Earth sign Virgo is the wall gardener’s ally. Vines fall under the rulership of Virgo, (although vines planted under this sign will grow well and bloom, some moon gardeners claim it’s not the best for the setting of fruit). If you’re looking for a vertical plant with an abundance of flowers to provide shade or shelter for other plants, choose this sign. This is also a good sign for tilling, but save other plantings for another sign. Image: Michelle…

Fire sign Leo is barren and dry. Bestowed with the honour of being the driest, least fecund sign of all, it is said to be the most successful for the purging of pests and disease and destroying old trees and remnant roots – especially when the moon is in its waning phase. It is also recommended as being a good sign to mow lawns to slow regrowth. IMAGE: Keeva999 Creative commons license Image has been cropped and had text added to it.

Moon Gardening - The Harvest Moon

Moon in Cancer Moon in Cardinal Water sign, Cancer is fruitful and moist – ruling vegetative growth, it’s the sign most conducive to successful sowing, transplanting and grafting. Seed is said to germinate faster and be more prolific when planted in the sign of Cancer. Moon in Taurus Productive and earthy, Taurus is one of my favourite places for the moon to be when gardening. Taurus is especially good for planting root crops and leafy greens because it lends the qualities of endurance and robustness to crops planted under its beams.

The enduring quality Moon in Taurus bestows is ideal for the planting of trees and the kinds of crops you're investing in for the long term.

Moon in Aries Moon in Fire sign, Aries is said to be dry and barren, ideal for destroying and eradicating weeds and pests, and preparing the ground for future, more fertile signs. Moon in Pisces Moon in water sign, Pisces is moist and fruitful. All of the water signs (Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio) are deemed beneficial for sowing seed and transplanting because they encourage and support the growth of roots. Planting in these signs is also said to be ideal for plants that will be subjected to times of drought. Because the root system is under the dominion of this sign, fruit trees are said to do well when planted in Pisces. Image: Michelle Montgomery.

Moon in Aquarius Moon in air sign, Aquarius is described as being barren and dry, which makes it ideal for culling weeds and pests, and, harvesting fruit and root crops. Cloning and assexual reproductive processes are also under the rulership of Aquarius, so these practices are recommended with the Aquarius moon. In her book Moon Gardening, Lunar Gardener, Louise Riotte says Moon in Aquarius also benefits the planting of Alliums and Pine trees.
