Horsin' Around: Out of the Vault

Aug. 22 - Dec. 22, 2016: Exhibit curated from rare, one-of-a-kind artwork in the Garis Gallery of the American West vault. Many of these have never been on public display and many have not been seen by the public in over a decade or longer. Artists have long held a fascination for horses. This exhibit features the work of such Native American greats as Donald Vann, Will Sampson and Doc Tate Nevaquaya, to other famous artists like Frank Tenney Johnson, Clark Hulings, Howard Terpning.

"Painting is my life. I am first, last and always a painter." - Will Sampson 1934-1987, buried in Grave Creek Indian Cemetery Okmulgee OK. The above piece is "Watching the Herd" 1973, oil on canvas. His name may not strike a familiar note with lovers of the American West art, but those familiar with "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" or "The Outlaw Josey Wales" among a score of other films (22 to be exact 1975-1986) will remember him as the big, quiet Indian.

His work can be found in comics, McDonald's Happy Meals boxes and storybooks. In 1999, his widow sought legal action against Disney for more than $50 million. Outcome of that is unknown.
