Fiddle Sticks – Undoubtedly the BEST game ever!! Could use for rhythm in centers!
Fiddle Stick, Sight Word Game, Classroom Game
Fiddle Sticks – Sounds like an easy and fun game for practicing skills such as sight word recognition and math facts or anything else you can think of, for that matter.
Fiddlesticks - site word recognition. Easy to make and fun for the kids to do... I don't like "loser" and "winner" when it comes to learning games (it can be discouraging to be the "loser" so I just keep a tracking sheet and the kids record their score so they can track their improvement.)
Fiddle Sticks - use timer for 2 min. to make even more fun? Sight word written on end. One "or few" have word AND red dot on back. If dot chosen - say "FIDDLESTICKS" and put all sticks back in.
Great math game or sight word game called Fiddle Sticks.Place sticks in cup with math facts and red tip toward the bottom. Players take turns choosing a stick to answer. If the player recites the fact correctly, he/she can keep the stick. If the fact is incorrect, the stick must be placed back in the cup. Play continues until one player chooses the stick with the red tip. The player must then put all their sticks in the cup. Play then continues. Student with most sticks after 10 minutes wins.
Fiddlesticks!!! Fun sight word game, works well for other skills!

Colored popsicle sticks
I was at the Dollar Tree this evening doing a bit of my Back to School shopping and I happened across these: What a great deal! 100 Popsicle sticks for $1.00. I think my box was $7 or $8 when I bought it at one of the craft stores. There are about 16 of each color which is great for Popsicle Stick Rhythms. You only need 12 sticks per students, so I would purchase 3 or 4 packages. Four may be a bit much but you would always have spares just in case. Here is the post I wrote in January about Popsicle Stick Rhythms. I'm thinking the variety of colors would lend themselves well for small group work. I'll have to think about that and how I could use a variety of colors for other rhythmic activities this year.

Genius. No more dice rolling on the floor or across the room or just lost in general. Do this for math games.
Controlled Dice~ No more dice flying around the room. Instead of buying these, try getting similar plastic containers and make your own!
To all my teacher friends. Saw this for those math centers from K - 5, this is genius. Seriously.
Dice Games or Math Games
Pinterest - Classroom Ideas and Inspiration
I was buzzing around pinterest, websites, and the internet and saw some simply clever teaching ideas. I thought you would love them too! Dice Game Containers It drives me crazy when students dice are rolling on the floor, and making a ton of noise during dice games in math. These little plastic containers are the perfect solution! You can purchase a set of 4 of them at the Dollar Store. Milk Crate Chairs I am always looking for creative storage solutions, and these milk crates are the next best thing for my classroom needs. I can't wait to purchase some milk crates, fun material, boards and cushion and create these milk crate chairs. These crates will be perfect for my center material storage, and will not take up space in the classroom because they will double as seats for my small group table. Brain Sprinkles This idea just cracks me up, and I know it will make the students smile! Every once and awhile the kids are stumped on coming up with an answer, and brain sprinkles will help them loosen up and hopefully help their brain waves retrieve the answer. Brain sprinkles are a great way if you want them to be motivated right before a test. Tattle Monsters This is how you turn simple tissue boxes into something super eye catching. This is a great way for students to write down what may be on their mind, and put it into the monster's mouth. Hopefully, this will allow the students to voice their concern and get their tattle out of the way, allow you to focus on teaching, and check in with the tattle monsters as it fits into your daily schedule. Here's to a year of productivity, and not a lot of tattling :)
Okay.... so I haven't pinned a lot lately... I don't know what is wrong with me?!? So I had to dig back into the archives and find some things that I thought would be good. So here it is.... This coin flip book came from Classroom Freebies. It was created by Diane. I will be doing this activity next week since I have decided to spend the last week of school reviewing coins and working on counting money. I feel like this is a skill that my kiddos really need to work on. I've seen this idea before but I still love it! In order to keep the kiddos from throwing the dice... putt them in clear containers. Have the kids roll the dice, and look through the clear bottom to see what was rolled. I really like these because of the pop of color. Super cute! (Could not locate the original posting. If you posted these, let me know so that I can give credit where credit is due!) I really like this craftivity from The Kinder Wife. Kids love anything that they can use their hands + paint for.... plus painted hands make most things so much cuter (this definitely being one of those things)!! I'm keeping this in mind for when I teach ocean life next year. Okay... so I know Mother's Day isn't over yet... but I only have one more week until I have to have Father's Day stuff accomplished. This bookmark from Creative Family Moments is adorable and any dad that likes to read is sure to love this! I love the idea of card games being used for math. I've been wanting to get my kids playing War... but then I think about all the other fun things you could do... like I could have kids add the cards together... or figure out the biggest number then subtract the cards... I'm half tempted to make all of my math centers card games next week. I mean... come on! Super fun! And this paper alliGREATER is super cute! Thanks Wendy @ Living Creatively for sharing this on your blog! Okay... just one more thing before I go tonight! I just created a cute Mother's Day Card and uploaded it to my TPT store! In honor of TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK I decided to make it FREE for TONIGHT ONLY! In the morning I will be changing it back to $1.50 (which is still a really good price). PLEASE leave me some feedback if you download this product! Thanks! We will finish our tomorrow.... Hopefully I'll remember to take some pictures so that I can show you the finished product.
I am linking up with Ashley Reed over at Just Reed. This week's Ten Pin Linky is Math Idea Pins. There are so many wonderful ideas out there. I love teaching math, but often struggle to get it all in with our math series (Go Math!) by following our counties pacing guide. My goal this year is to incorporate math groups by using the Daily 5 for Math. Here are a few activities I have found on Pinterest to introduce a concept or to use as practice. 1. I love this board and have purchased Cara Carroll's Calendar Companion. http://pinterest.com/source/justreed-ashley.blogspot.ca/ 2. This can be challenging at the beginning of first grade, but the kids rise to the occasion with lots of practice:) http://pinterest.com/source/mrswilliamsonskinders.blogspot.com/ 3. The clock visual is great once the concept of time has been introduced not to mention it can replace the "That time is lunch?" question:) http://pinterest.com/source/teacherspayteachers.com/ 4. No more dice falling on the floor:) http://pinterest.com/source/sunnydaysinsecondgrade.blogspot.com/ 5. 6. I have a math vocabulary pocket chart, but this is so much more appealing and attention grabbing. http://pinterest.com/source/justreed-ashley.blogspot.ca/ 7. http://pinterest.com/source/stepintosecondgrade.blogspot.com/ 8. This is such a great visual from A Cupcake For the Teachers for sums of 10. http://pinterest.com/source/acupcakefortheteacher.blogspot.com/ 9. We always chant, "The little hand tells the hour and the big hand counts by 5." 10. My first unit on TpT was Ladybug Addition. I plan on going back to update it, but am on vacation for 2 more weeks:) So, until then, Ladybug Addition will be FREE! I would love you to leave some TpT feedback if you download it:) http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ladybug-Addition-Mats
I spend WAY too much time on Pinterest. When I saw this linky (hosted by Ashley from Just Reed) it looked like something I had to join in on. So...in no particular order, here are my 10 favorite pins for math ideas. I have added links back to the original sources (as far as I could tell, anyhow). If I have incorrectly given credit, please let me know. Thanks! One of my first inspirations while planning for Math workstations: Source: Adventures in Teaching No more flying dice...right? This Saturday, Kodaly Music Educators of Kansas hosted Amy Abbott from Music a la Abbott in Wichita for our Spring KMEK workshop. Over 60 teachers from Kansas and neighboring states attended Amy's session, "Say, Say, Oh Playmate," which was packed full of fun singing games for upper elementary. Those are the kids that I am always finding I am needing additional resources and games for, or maybe I just get bored of some of the ones I have... I don't know. Either way, this session was just what we needed to motivate us to keep the joy going in the music class as the end of the year draws near. Amy has so graciously said I can share some videos that fellow KMEK members shared and I will try to cite where the songs come from. I definitely recommend looking into these sources for more information as well as having your local Kodaly chapter invite Amy out. I can say that she was definitely among my favorite presenters! :) Little Swallow - stick passing game Source: 150 American Folk Songs Epo I Tai Tai - performed in 4 part canon. Source: Amy learned this song from Susan Brumfield. If you have a primary source, please let me know. One, Two, Three O'Leary Source: Singing Games and Rhymes for the Middle Years Crosstown (When Billy Was One) Source: Amy learned this from Kathy Hickey. If you have more source information, please let me know! Cobbler,Cobbler (Pass the Shoe) Source: Jill Trinka Have you played any of these before? I hope you enjoyed a peek into our workshop. We definitely have some amazing things going on in Kansas. We hope you can join us in Wichita for MKMEA 2015 this October!
My kids really enjoy this song. I bring it out when preparing/presenting/practicing ti-tiri by isolating just the last line of the song. We play the jump rope game that goes with it, substituting "Ella" for the name of the kid jumping in. When the people spinning the rope sing your name, you get to run in and jump. If they make it past 4 letters, we just continue counting regularly in a speaking voice. This song makes an appearance again when we work on tiri-ti. I think they are a little surprised that there was an unknown rhythm in this song since we just isolated the last line previously. It also is great for reading fa! Lyrics: Steady beat (this also helps to make sure that the jump rope is being spun steadily!): Rhythmic icons: Known rhythms plus icons for new rhythm: Introducing our new rhythm. After, I immediately follow with practice reading this rhythm from flashcards and other songs. Stick notation with solfa- new note Someone new has moved into Meldoy Street Icons for pitch with lyrics: Icons for pitch with solfege - new note: Icons on staff: After we learn fa, I have repeats of those last slides with fa filled in as the mystery note (both on and off the staff) Below it is pictured on the staff: Finally we get to read it from the staff in standard notation! The whole download is available as a PDF on my Teachers Pay Teachers page: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Skipping-Rope-Song-Rhythm-and-Melody-Slides Please feel free as always to comment or email with any questions!
