The real-life settings and people in IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE, set in 1876 Deadwood, SD. It's the story of Fox Matthews, who comes to Deadwood to forget a battle he couldn't change, and Maddie Avery, a proper young lady from Philadelphia who is shocked by conditions in this wild frontier town. Can these two overcome the many obstacles that separate them?
Captain Jack Crawford, known as "The Poet Scout". Civil War veteran, Old West Scout, and Popular Poet of Western Lore.  Crawford is in IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE, reading his poem  about the Battle of Little Bighorn, written just after the news of its outcome reached Deadwood.

Calamity Jane was in Deadwood during the summer of 1876. She was known for her grief after Wild Bill Hickok was killed.

Martha Jane Canary, better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman, and professional scout best known for her claim of being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok, but also for having gained fame fighting Indians.

This image is of Deadwood, SD, in June 1876. Maddie Avery arrives  from Philadelphia with her family and is appalled by the town. It's easy to see why!

There aren't any images of Crazy Horse, a character in IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE, but He Dog (seen here) also appears in the book. He Dog surrendered with Crazy Horse in May 1877.
