Lucy Page Mercer Rutherfurd was an American woman best known for her affair with future US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She took a position as the social secretary of Eleanor Roosevelt, Franklin's wife, in 1914. Mercer and Franklin are believed to have begun an affair in mid-1916, which was discovered by Eleanor in September 1918. Lucy Mercer reportedly was with FDR when he died.

A previously unseen watercolour by Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) fetched £289,500 at auction yesterday, (2008) a record for a book illustration. The painting, depicting rabbits leaving a Christmas party, was the final piece of a trio painted by Potter, in about 1892. It was sold to a private collector at Sotheby’s in London for nearly five times its upper estimate.
