WOW dress c. 1855, Cotton plain weave with cotton cutwork embroidery (broderie anglaise)
Little boy's pinafore, probably English, c. 1855. Cotton, embroidery and cutwork lace.
C.1855 The boy’s frock incorporates a white-work technique, broderie anglaise, in which small eyelets are outlined with sturdy embroidery stitches and cut out of the ground fabric. Although the result resembled lace, it could withstand frequent washing and was therefore practical for children’s clothing. Technically very simple, this imitation lace was lower in cost that real lace, and it became increasingly available as the nineteenth century progressed.

Empire costume worn by Merle Oberon as Joséphine de Beauharnais in the 1954 film "Désirée." As with most film costumes at the time, this is based less in historical fashion than in the styles of the day. THIS WOULD MAKE A GREAT WEDDING DRESS!!
