Stephanotis floribunda does well in full sun to light shade near the coast but requires some protection away from the coast. The Madagascar Jasmine does best with the roots in a cool shaded location. This plant was planted on the North side of a slatted fence so the plants could start out in shade and then shade their own roots. Stephanotis floribunda does surprisingly well in a low water garden once established. The fragrant flowers are often used in bridal nosegay's and grooms boutonnière's. The Madagascar Jasmine blooms through much of the Summer. Stephanotis floribunda is Winter hardy in frost free or nearly frost free gardens.

Perovskia atriplicifolia is a great plant for the sunny perennial or shrubby border. The soft grey leaves and blue flowers are showy for a long time in the garden. Not much that winter can throw out will ever present a problem for this hardy plant. Perovskia atriplicifolia can take Winter conditions in zone 3. Even if the plants don't die back in our mild climate, I still cut the Russian Sage nearly to the ground each winter. This hard trimming clears out the previous years branches which die back to near the base regardless. Reasonable drainage is about the only rigid requirement.

The Peruvian Lily, Scilla peruviana is a Spring knockout. In our area it needs little or no help. The name is a bit misleading, Scilla peruviana is native to South Western Europe and Northern Africa. It does grow quite well in Peru and the Carribean though. The Portuguese Squill was imported early and has naturalized in much of this area. Well drained soil, or at least a slope, minimal summer water, and some inland shade are all helpful for success with in your garden. We have had volunteers, but Scilla peruviana has been a good garden citizen. Plants are hardy into the teens.

Where the weather gets a little rough and you MUST have an exotic bloom Passiflora caerulea varieties are about the hardiest around. Constance Elliott is more than reliable in our area. Here is your ticket to the tropics. The fruit on Passiflora Constance Elliot is edible and orange. I eat the pulp off the seeds. Maybe best of all the Gulf Frittilary butterflies come by in droves. In some yards the butterflies have eaten all of the foliage. My vine has always grown just a little faster than they can eat. If you want to have a Butterfly Garden, the butterflies make this Passion Vine worth its space all by themselves. Passion vines have interesting methods of spreading pollen. And intriguing egg mimic appendages to fool butterflies that wish to deposit their eggs. This is an excellent plant to host gulf fritillary caterpillars on in your butterfly garden.

Setaria palmifolia not only is a spectacular specimen plant it is just fun to touch. Rub towards the middle and the leaves are so rough you get stuck, rub the other way and they are smooth. Setaria palmifolia grows 4-6 feet. I love the linear ridges on the leaves as the light angle gets low. The Palm Grass while drought tolerant, likes some water, and will look better for it. The Palm Grass will generate some seedlings to spread around or dispatch. This is one ornamental grass that can catch the slightest breeze and add movement to the garden. I cut the Palm Grass back to about 6" tall as Winter turns towards Spring. Setaria palmifolia is Winter hardy down into the low 20°s F.

Lavandula stoechas Otto Quast has these fabulous pale purple rabbit ears and dark purple flowers. In all other regards the plants grow just like the other Lavandula stoechas cultivars. They are easy to grow, they stay low, they bloom for a long time from Spring into Summer. Even longer if you have the inclination to cut off all of the dead flower heads. Lavandula stoechas has low water needs and is great for the Drought tolerant garden. Spanish lavender will tolerate temperatures into the low teens or even single digits.

Lavandula intermedia Grosso becomes a 2-3 foot diameter shrub. The flower stalks are a foot to 18" in length. Lavandula Grosso is about the most fragrant of the lavenders and is often used in perfumes and for aromatherapy. Lavandula Grosso, like many of the lavenders is a short lived woody shrub. I expect 3 or 4 years out of the Lavandin Grosso before the middle of the shrub starts to die back. In the meantime they are a wonderfully fragrant component of the herb or Mediterranean garden. Lavandula Grosso is hardier than most of the other lavenders but will be damaged when the winters dip into the low teens. Lavandin Grosso requires reasonable drainage and prefer full sun. Lavandula Grosso attracts a variety of butterflies to the garden including the Hairstreaks, Fiery Skipper, Mournful Duskywing, Sara Orangetip, and the California Dogface Butterfly. I find that Lavandula Grosso looks pretty scrappy unless the flower stalks are periodically removed. This is not as bad a chore as it might seem though if you plant a lot of them it can take a bit of time. The flowers dry nicely, and I often use them in dried arrangements. And the flowers add wonderful flavors when added to a brewing recipe, lemonade, or chocolate tarts.

Ipheion uniflorum blooms in the depths of Winter in our gardens. The Spring Star flower is just a little earlier than its name might indicate. Blooms can occur from Fall to mid Spring. I use Ipheion uniflorum for a little color in a lawn, or for a surprise element in the garden. The bulbs do quite well without additional irrigation. So I plant them along pathways or in a lawn where I want the meadow look. This photo was taken in at the base of a large liquidamber in February, though the plants do equally well in full sun. Ipheion uniflorum is hardy well into the single digits.

Hypoestes aristata, the Ribbon Bush grows to 4 - 5 feet tall and wide. The plants stay a lush green throughout the year. With a late Fall into Winter display of violet flowers they attract the resident hummingbirds quite well in our gardens. Hypoestes aristata grows in full sun to partial shade. Ribbon Bush will fare quite well in a drought tolerant garden as do many other South African plants. Hypoestes aristata is frost tolerant of temperatures that drop into the low to mid 20°s F.

Hydrangea serrata is native to the mountains of Korea and Japan. The Lace Hydrangea prefers shade in most gardens unless very close to the coast. Hydrangea serrata tolerates a lot more drought than might be expected once the plants are established. I trim out all of the older stalks each Winter and trim off the dead flowers as they fade in the Summer. Like other Hydrangeas the color of the flowers can be affected by the pH of the soil. Hydrangea serrata does best with reasonable drainage. The large green leaves provide a lush feel to a garden on a water budjet. The foliage is used for an herbal tea. Hydrangea serrata produces flowers starting late in the Spring and Summer, and will continue into the first part of Fall if the spent flowers are removed. Hydrangea serrata is Winter hardy to zone 6

Lavandula Goodwin Creek Grey is noted for the silvery foliage and dark purple flowers. Goodwin Creek Lavender is free flowering, even during the Winter in mild climates. Lavandula Goodwin Creek Grey requires decent drainage and does best in a low water garden once established. Goodwin Creek Lavender looks best when the dead flowers are removed and when the second year foliage is cut out from under the new growth. Lavandula Goodwin Creek Grey grows 2 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. Lavandula Goodwin

Woodwardia fimbriata grows in stream bottoms, shaded woodlands, and north facing slopes. The Giant Chain Fern grows 6-8 feet tall and wide and gradually spreads by 6" thick rhizomes. Woodwardia fronds live one season, plants look best if the old fronds are removed as the new ones come on. Woodwardia fimbriata is great for making a tropical look on a low water budget.

This old favorite, Artemisia 'powis castle' stays about 3' tall and can get to 5-6 feet wide. The soft gray leaves mix well in a lavender garden. I often mix this plant into a lavender garden. The plants are hardy to 15 or lower. If I have a standby plant that might be used in all gardens this might be it. In large part I use Artemisia Powis Castle because it will grow very quickly and allow a garden to rapidly fill in. It is somewhat short-lived, sometimes only lasting a couple of seasons. But by this time the other plants have finally started to hit their stride.

Antirrhinum hispanicum is as free flowering a prennial as I have met. The Spanish Snapdragon seems almost always to be blooming away, often spectacularly. Antirrhinum hispanicum grows to about a foot tall and two or more feet wide. Antirrhinum hispanicum is a good choice for a low water garden, but this is not a plant it and walk away as some drought tolerant plants are capable of surviving. Spanish Snapdragon is a good choice for including in a Cottage Garden style on a water budget. Antirrhinum hispanicum can have white or pink flowers. Antirrhinum hispanicum is winter hardy to zone 5.
