I spend WAY too much time on Pinterest. When I saw this linky (hosted by Ashley from Just Reed) it looked like something I had to join in on. So...in no particular order, here are my 10 favorite pins for math ideas. I have added links back to the original sources (as far as I could tell, anyhow). Great math center game money game Hot glue some coins to about 20 popsicle sticks. Write "Kaboom" on about 5 sticks. Kids play in groups of 24. When it's your turn, you pull out a stick. You add the coin values and tell the amount. If your partner or group members agree with you, you get to keep the stick. If you pull a Kaboom stick you have to put all of your sticks back in the cup.
Lots of math game ideas from a 2nd grade teacherThis one is counting coins with a partner. If you draw the kaboom stick you lose all your sticks you've collected.
Anyone else singing the song when they read that title? Ok, good! :) The other day at Staple's I found this play money and coins in their dollar section. Add to that I was using the "everything in this bag is 15% off" deal and I was super excited! I bought a few packs of each. Today I felt inspired to create some money themed games for my kiddos. I don't currently have any money games out in my math games except for a set of flashcards. I decided to use one set of the coins to make a kaboom game. All I did was hot glue some coins to popsicle sticks. I also wrote "Kaboom" on about 5 sticks. Then all of the sticks went face down into a pringles can that i cut down to size. The game is super easy to play. (There are lots of Kaboom games out there in bloggy land.) Kids play in groups of 24. When it's your turn you pull out a stick. You add the coin values and tell the amount. If your partner or group members agree with you, you get to keep the stick. If you pull a Kaboom stick you have to put all of your sticks back in the cup. :( I added some scrapbook paper and a fancy little label and voila, math game success! I also made my very first, I made it math game!!! Yay me! It's called Show Me the Money and involves the kids using plastic coins to show how they would "buy" items. I got the idea from the Debbie Diller Math book. I just wanted a prettier recording sheet than the one in her book :) To download the show me the money recording sheet, click HERE. To download the show me the money directions, click HERE. I'm happy to share these as a freebie with everyone but I do love comments and followers. :) Enjoy!

Happy Monday! I can't believe it is almost the end of April. The end of the year is rapidly approaching, which has me thinking ahead to little tweaks I'd like to make next year. Of course, there is a pretty high chance that I'll be making a change of grade level for next year, which could be fun and exciting, but, at least for the time being I'm going to ignore that possibility and pretend I'll be teaching 3rd grade forever. I have been so happy using Guided Math in my classroom this year. I think it has been really beneficial to my littles and I have been really pleased with the amount of time I've been able to spend working with small groups and differentiating. When I think ahead to next year, I know there are a few minor adjustments I want to make, though. Currently, these are my stations: M Math fact practice A At your seat journals T Teacher Group H Handson learning Here is what I'm proposing for next year (and a preview of the posters from the Guided Math pack that will be making its way to my TpT shop very soon): Math facts and problem solving. These will be my math journals. This past year, I gave my students a weekly prompt and I feel that it really helped their problem solving skills. I plan to continue that this year, but will add fact practice as an early finisher activity. I'd really like to do differentiated math folders next year, where I can give each student worksheets or activities to do that are more tailored to their individual needs. I have some students who really, really need extra practice with their multiplication facts because they have not been practicing outside of class. I have other students who need to be challenged with some enrichment activities. Of course, I will be keeping my Teacher Time center. This is my favorite aspect of Guided Math. I love working with small groups and this is a great time for me to reinforce or reteach skills when needed, elaborate, and challenge students depending on what they individually need. I will be keeping my Handson center. This is where my students play math practice games. I'll also be adding some of the fact practice games, such as beat the clock multiplication, here. This is very similar to what I did this year except that I am wanting to eliminate the computer fact practice center and replace it with the differentiated folders. I love incorporating technology, and I think that sometimes I'd like to put a computer pass or task card in the folders but I also don't think that this center fully maximized learning this year. It was fun and certainly good practice but not always what my students needed most. What do your Guided Math/Math Workshop centers look like?

**Update** This was featured on The 2 Sister's TheDailyCafe.com Newsletter on July 6, 2012! I have several options for my Daily 5 Word Work where kids can choose activities to practice their independent words. One of the stations I like best is How Much is Your Word Worth? This is a fantastic way to combine math and spelling! I have assigned each coin a value and students need to figure out how much their spelling word is worth. There are some additional questions on the bottom to determine which word is worth the most, least or the same. I print these out on cardstock and laminate them. I also pair it with play money for my more tactile kids who need to manipulate the money to make a pile for their word. It has been wonderful to see kids have this repeated practice with money throughout the year! Interested in Word Worth? Check it out in my TpT Store!
Have you ever visited the Sister's TheDailyCafe.com? It is the goto for all things Daily 5, CAFE, Daily 5 Math, and more straight from the Sisters themselves! Well, I have exciting news: 3rd Grade Thoughts is featured today in their Tip of the Week! They wrote me a few weeks back asking if they could share my Word Work idea: How Much is Your Word Worth? Of course, I said yes! For more information about this activity, visit my blog post about it HERE and if you are interested in purchasing it, find it in my TpT Store HERE. If you haven't yet signed up for their Tip of the Week, it is a free weekly newsletter that is full of teacher ideas, ideas from the Sisters, and helpful ways to incorporate D5 and CAFE into your class. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Speaking of signing up, I am in the process of creating a monthly newsletter!
