The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon Joe Kavalier, a young Jewish artist who has also been trained in the art of Houdini-esque escape, has just smuggled himself out of Nazi-invaded Prague and landed in New York City. His Brooklyn cousin Sammy Clay is looking for a partner to create heroes, stories, and art for the latest novelty to hit America - the comic book.
One of my favorite books -- Michael Chabon is always worth reading, but this is the very best. Epic, surprising, and enlightening.
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures (1997) Anne Fadiman I had to read this book for my HBSE 1: Cultural Diversity course. Good account of common mistakes and suggestions for good practice when working with people from different cultures.
A wonderfully engaging story of culture clash and communication. I also learned a lot about Hmong culture.

Must read for anyone in the medical field!
This non fiction book details the conflicting philosophies of Hmong culture and American culture in regards to medicine. I highly recommend this for upper classmen composition classes.
Read this all in one day on a beach. A unique way of perceiving reality. Or not?

Life of Pi - very thought provoking book.
Just finished reading this one! So good!

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien . . . read for book club in 2007 . . . "A GREAT book. A collection of short stories about the Vietnam War. So closely tied, they read like chapters. This book will stay with you."

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (P.S.): Betty Smith - A classic I know but my first time reading it. The story of Francie Nolan and her family at the turn of the 20th century, through their struggles and pursuit to make a better life, while appreciating what they do have which is little. Great book and it's a classic for a reason.

A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Considered to be one of the greatest books of the 20th Century. Always want this book never remembered the Author. My very favorite book as a young girl.

Cloud Atlas, such a great book. worth a read before the movie comes out!
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell- Six related stories that span thousands of years. The writer offers a journal of a nineteenth-century traveler, letters from an early twentieth-century composer, the adventures of a mid-1970s journalist, the more comic adventures of a contemporary small publisher, the ordeal of a clone in a corporate-driven future, and a post-apocalyptic tale in the far distant future. Definitely worth reading, even if you have seen the film. Recommended by Dr. Mike George.
“Cloud Atlas” by David Mitchell Cloud Atlas is one of those books that is a great example of good science fiction that is sectioned and shelved in regular fiction for its literary qualities. Each of the stories in the book feature references that link them with the succeeding and preceding stories. The book feels more like a short story collection that a themed novel - both original and entertaining. In 2012, the book was re-released to tie up with the movie adaptation starring Tom Hanks.
