Buddhism, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

Some of my favorite Buddhist Iconography, including Thangkas, Temples, Statues and People. Buddhist art is the beautiful outward expression of a beautiful way of thinking, acting, and living.

Green Tara ♥ Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha ♥ Om = essence of enlightenment, manifest and incarnate. Tare = quickly with boldness. Tuttare = clearing away all fear, distress and suffering of all beings. Ture = complete victory of truth over all negativity. Svaha = all accomplishments (amen).

Vajrayogini - a Highest Yoga Tantra Yidam, her practice includes methods for preventing ordinary death, intermediate state (bardo) and rebirth (by transforming them into paths to enlightenment), and for transforming all mundane daily experiences into higher spiritual paths.

Monk with his cat. One of the things I love most about Buddhists and Buddhism is their absolute love for animals.

Dalai Lama - the smile that expands the mind

His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The world would be a vastly better place if we could all learn to laugh as much as he does.

Cats taking teaching from a Lama...sometimes I think we should be learning from the cats...

Samantabhadra and His consort in Tantric embrace. Probably the Buddhist image most responsible for shocking little old Christian ladies into closed-mindedness. While it IS symbolic of sexual pleasure in its most outward expression, it is more deeply symbolic of a Buddhist's ability to channel that pleasure into a furthering of the path toward enlightenment.

Giant Buddha, Leshan, China

Lama Zopa Rinpoche and His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2011. Lama Zope Rinpoche suffered a stroke a few months ago, but seems to be recovering quite well. He is a kind, compassionate, wonderful human being whose laugh is absolutely infectious. Whatever your path, prayers for his health and long life are always welcomed.

Lama Thubten Yeshe. A teacher for the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition and close friend of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Yeshe is one of the reasons I became involved in Buddhism. He embodies all of the characteristics that contribute to the betterment of the world: Kindness, Joy, Compassion, Understanding, Tolerance, and Love.

Thousand-Armed Chenresig

Chenresig is the embodiment of the infinite compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. This image is dedicated to all kind teachers of the Dharma and especially to the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, recognized as the human incarnation of Chenresig.

A representation of Lord Buddha with stretched ears. I tried convincing my girlfriend that I stretched my ears in admiration and imitation of the compassionate Buddha. She didn't buy it. When I said Jesus would approve of them, she gave me that particular look of hers that means the next words out of my mouth better be an apology or a statement of jewelry purchasing intent. I'm not ashamed to admit I apologized. From a safe distance, that is.

Lord Krishna. Not a Buddhist Deity, I know, but I feel a strong affinity with many of the representations of the Hindu Deities, especially Lord Krishna and Lakshmi. Of course, Lord Buddha is numbered among the Divine in Hindu theology as well, and it's nice for him to be in such good company. And, at the very least, Hindu iconography, like the Buddhist, is absolutely beautiful, inspiring, and soul-refreshing.
