This heartfelt movie has many good themes about healing, friendship, compassion, positive connections and more.
In MARY POPPINS RETURNS, Michael Banks and his sister Jane are now adults. Michael has children of his own, who are in desperate need of a nanny because they have lost their mother. This lovely movie encourages the value of family and the importance of imagination. This award-winning movie is full of delightful entertainment with spectacular dance numbers and sweet, endearing songs. It features Emily Blunt, who is delightful as Mary Poppins, along with Lin-Manuel Miranda and other stars.
Disney’s Queen of Katwe follows a Ugandan slum girl’s rise from a hopeless future to that of an international chess player. David Oyelowo (Selma) plays Robert Katende, a missionary and refugee of Uganda’s civil war who as a chess teacher sees potential in 9-year-old Phiona Mutesi. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) plays her mother. It is about love for family and young people. This movie is rated PG and is appropriate for older children through adults.

Earlier American Black Panthers as have other Black militants used power to destroy, but this Black Panther uses power for Good for All.

The Good Dinosaur, a Pixar animation (PG), features twice as many special effects as earlier Pixar films. It is about Arlo, a young dinosaur who is swept down a river and has to make his way back home to his family. On his way he encounters a human boy named Spot, who becomes his companion. As Arlo faces nature, as an imposing antagonist, Pixar uses its impressive array of special effects to bring the changing landscape surrounding Arlo to life. This is an inspirational movie about a young dino.
Jungle Book is a live-action, adventure film about Mowgli, a “man-cub” raised by a family of wolves. Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan determines to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Mowgli sets on journey of self-discovery, guided by his mentors panther Bagheera and bear Baloo. Mowgli encounters Kaa, a python whose seductive voice, gaze hypnotizes him and the smooth-talking King Louie, who tries to get Mowgli to give up the secret to fire.
Moana is an amazing animated, action-packed movie with realistically fast-moving water in an ocean adventure story. Most importantly, Moana is also about love for and commitment to family, friends, and community. A significant theme is about social responsibility. Moana is a good role model for young people. This is a delightful, entertaining movie for older children through adults.
