The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, being assembled in Paris. The French historian and professor Edouard de Laboulaye proposed the idea of presenting the United States with a monument to commemorate the US' upcoming centennial and a bond between the two nations. Sculpted and designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and designed by engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. The statue arrived in the New York harbor in 1885. commentary by Anne Stills
