Writing in salt (this site has Montessori & Montessori-inspired activities). Is salt the best idea for this? I might choose sugar. Salt hurts when it gets in your eyes.

Have the child say the individual letters as they trace them in the salt/cornmeal, and you're addressing all three learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
