Adorable Pictures of Famous Writers and Their Pets
Last year I used to have a daily visitor who would sit with me at my desk, often a warm cushion at my back but always a calming companionable presence. Sadly the animal only known to me as Cat was killed by a neighbourhood dog. I never fed Cat because it is wrong to try and take over somebody else's pet but even though I did nothing to encourage her, she appeared here every day and seemed happy enough. I don't plan to get my own cat but every now and then sitting up here in the study, I feel the gap that Cat left and wonder why cats are such helpful creatures when anyone tries to write. Far be it from me to compare myself to the writers below but there seems to be something that they all had in common. I suppose if their cats were like my Cat, their silent intelligent companionship inspired without distracting anyone undertaking the solitary job of writing. Raymond Chandler William S. Burroughs Ernest Hemingway Hermann Hesse Tennessee Williams Jean Paul Sartre Allen Ginsberg Jack Kerouac Alberto Moravia Aldous Huxley Charles Bukowski Doris Lessing Edward Albee Gore Vidal Hunter S. Thompson Jacques Prevert Jean Cocteau Jorge Luis Borges Joseph Brodsky Julio Cortazar Mark Twain Patricia Highsmith Truman Capote W.H. Auden William Carlos Williams T.S. Eliot I couldn't find a photograph of the most famous cat loving poet, T.S. Eliot but here he is reading on of his cat poems: If T.S. Eliot's Cats have made you think of something else then don't blame me. It would be mean of me to deprive you though so here's a secret video clip to be watched strictly in private. Never admit that you've seen it and I promise I won't tell. Scroll down to it when no one's around... ..... .... ... .. .
I came across an awesome and adorable Tumblr blog this weekend: Writers and Kitties. A few of my favorites: 1) William Carlos Williams (look how dapper & lovely he was!): ___________________ 2) Tennessee Williams (& a curious kitteh): ___________________ 3) Mark Twain (aww!): ____...

Elliott Erwitt's photography has had a large influence on my own street photography. He is one of those rare photographers that uses humor in his work that has spanned a 60 year career. Erwitt was born in France, studied at Los Angeles City College and has been a member of Magnum Photos since1953. Photos by Elliott Erwitt
Sourcing images from large and small collections alike, the William Stafford Gallery is constantly adding new prints to its offerings. These black-and-white and sepia prints, as exciting as they are evocative, manage to be completely iconic, yet remain a far cry from overexposed. In fact, many have only recently been rediscovered, which only enhances their collectible status.

Robert Redford & Paul Newman - Butch & Sundance 1969
Hello Robert Redford and Paul Newman. I have been watching some TCM lately and mulling old time movie stars/matinée idols. I prefer a manly man type, more Matt Damon than Leonardo DiCaprio in today's term's. But the classics- oh, they're the best. I dare you to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid without falling madly in love with these two: Then there are the rest of my true loves most handsome men in the world favorites- Although Daniel Craig has made massive strides, no one but Sean Connery is the true Bond- who can beat his combination of arrogance and sophistication? Steve McQueen- the bad boy. When this photo was published in Life magazine in 1963, a reader wrote- "Sirs: Was it necessary to show such suggestive and provocative photographs of Steve McQueen and his lovely wife...? I am no prude but your magazine is seen every week by our most important national asset, the teen-agers, and you are setting a bad example by displaying such photographs." Gregory Peck. He's Atticus Finch- enough said on that sexy factor. Okay, if you need more, see Roman Holiday. Then the all time gold standard. Mr. Cary Grant If you want to swoon, please rent the following; To Catch a Thief (try not to covet Grace Kelly's wardrobe so bad that tears spring to your eyes), Indiscreet, That Touch of Mink (a Doris Day movie with Cary taking over for Rock Hudson), or An Affair to Remember. Dark, dashing, and debonair, he broke the mold. Who am I forgetting off my list of classic hotties? Inform, remind and educate me!
