Will Apple's 12-inch MacBook Air Use One Port to Rule Them All? • "The under-appreciated USB Type-C port standard is ripe for Apple to utilize. Like the Lightning system on the iPhone and iPad, a USB Type-C works with reversible plugs. Plus, it's thin, and Apple is obsessed with slimming down its products. To make a single port workable for consumers who want to connect their MacBooks to printers or storage devices, Apple could produce a small and light hub." • by Chris Maxcer

Apple plans Apple University in China, bringing Jobs’ vision to Asia • "Apple is seeking to cement its business position in China for the long-term with an expansion of its Cupertino-based Apple University program to the region, according to a person with knowledge of the plans. Apple Vice President and Dean of Apple University Joel Podolny is currently interviewing candidates for a new Dean of Apple University position for China, according to the source." • by Mark Gurman on 9to5mac

iPad Pro Rumor Comes Up for Air • "The iPad Air 2 will see a boost through holiday sales. At the same time, the first sets of iOS apps created by the collaboration between IBM and Apple will start hitting the market, which should goose some enterprise iPad sales. IBM, by the way, will be able to sell the iPad directly into its enterprise accounts, which also fuels new iPad 'Pro' version rumors." • by Chris Maxcer on TechNewsWorld

To Siri, With Love • "Just how bad a mother am I? I wondered, as I watched my 13-year-old son deep in conversation with Siri. Gus has autism, and Siri, Apple’s 'intelligent personal assistant' on the iPhone, is currently his B.F.F. Obsessed with weather formations, Gus had spent the hour parsing the difference between isolated and scattered thunderstorms — an hour in which, thank God, I didn’t have to …" by Judith Newman - NYTimes

"In all likelihood we’re not just seeing the death of the iPod Classic, but the death of the dedicated portable music player. Now it’s all phones and apps. Everything is a camera. The single-use device is gone—and with it, the very notion of cool that it once carried." • by Mat Honan • photo: Jim Merithew / WIRED

Apple hires Angela Ahrendts’ confidant & former Nike exec to lead social media efforts • "Apple is giving its social media department a significant shot in the arm this week. Patent Tips Apple's iWatch Hand • "Apple's 'iWatch' or 'iTime' or whatever it ends up being named very likely will have something smartwatches currently in the market don't have. That special something is still hidden in Cupertino. However, it better not have something all the others do have – that is, a big and ugly form factor. Even more than getting the functionality right, Apple fans are counting on the company to get the design right." by John P. Mello Jr.

"It is not, said the pianist turned software entrepreneur Robert Taub, a karaoke app with video. Instead his new app, Hook’d, creates what he described as 'musical selfies,' in which only the voice track sounds like the user. Unlike singalong apps that play covers — renditions of hit songs rerecorded by anonymous studio musicians — Hook’d features everything from the original recording except the voice track." • by James Barron

Next iPad May Be Loaded With iPhone Hand-Me-Downs • "'Tablets evolved very quickly, and now they've gotten to a level that's pretty darn good. ... I think the reason they're starting to take a hit is that people are realizing they don't need to upgrade because there isn't enough change to make a difference,' said Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at Technalysis. I agree, Judi. Unfortunately, the pin description I used doesn't do justice to Mello's main point, i.e., the features the iPad will inherit from the iPhone: Touch ID fingerprint reader; front and rear camera on par with iPhone 5s; dual LED flash; burst mode for stills; slow motion mode for video; quad-core A8 chip, etc. I'll leave the pin description as is and hope that this comment serves to inform pinners as to the breadth of the article.

A Red-Hot Rumor About Apple Falls Apart

bits.blogs.nytimes.com

The Calm Before 2014's Tech Storm: Apple Will Bring the Rain • "There's a lot on Apple's plate that should make for big, wild 2014 that will settle the innovation question. The iPhone will get a bigger screen, possibly made of sapphire glass. The iWatch likely will hit, possibly overrunning the competition in the category. OS X will be due for a refresh, as will the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and the iPad. And Apple TV may finally come into its own." • by Chris Maxcer / TechNewsWorld

Apple's Story: Passion, Patience and Pressure • "Passion is cool and patience is good, but neither can produce innovative products again and again. Creative people need pressure to get things done – pressure to pry their hands from their creation and let it loose in the world. When? When it's perfect enough. Few creative people ever feel they got it entirely right. Steve Jobs had the ability to leverage intense pressure. Does Tim Cook?" • by Chris Maxcer / TechNewsWorld
