UPDATED LINKS: Pete the Cat Freebies and the Common Core Standards
Everyone loves the adorable blue kitty, Pete the Cat. Who couldn't...he is so carefree and so cool and so groovy, too! When I know my students love something (in this case Pete), I take full on advantage of it. Since we are in the throws of adding and subtracting, poor Pete is going to get used to the bone to help teach and practice adding and subtracting fluently within 5. (Ding, ding, ding! You are correct....that is a Kindergarten Common Core Standard!)If you are from a typical kindergarten classroom, you have probably always introduced adding and subtracting in previous years, but never expected fluency with math facts...that is, until now! I am going to use Pete losing his buttons for subtraction and Pete finding his buttons for addition. Groovy, huh? The only thing I think that Pete might find a bit disturbing about this whole thing is that I am going to have to add a button to his jacket so we are in the proper parameters of 05 (there are only 4 buttons on his jacket in the actual book). Do you think Pete will care??? Goodness, no...he'll just keep walking along, singing his song, I am sure. Come on over to grab my FREE 10, 5 and double 10 frames to use with all of those extra buttons you have kicking around your classroom. Get students excited about the release of this new book (less than a month, but who's counting?) by sharing these fancy frames with them!

This week we are teaching estimation by rounding to the nearest 10 and to the nearest 100, CCSS 3.NBT.1. On Monday, we created this anchor chart with our classes: We also watched Brainpop!'s Rounding video and stopped before the Rounding Decimals part. Students copied the anchor chart into their notebook onto their Frayer model anchor chart: We also felt that it would help students to have a hundred chart with rounding tips, so they glued this chart from Super Teacher Worksheets into their notebook for this week, too. Switching Groups MidWeek For the first time since starting math workshop, we changed our four math groups midweek this week. We noticed certain students in the lowest group grasping estimation quicker than students in the lowmedium group. Based on yesterday's closure activity and inclass observations at the teacher station, we swapped some students between the red (lowest) and yellow (lowmedium) groups. For example, Johnny was in the red group but was catching on quicker than Suzy in the yellow group, so we switched the two. Today, Suzy received more support during teacher station because her peers were at the same instructional level. This change emphasized to us how important ongoing assessment and closure are to driving instructional decisions. This is truly differentiated instruction. Another Math Workshop Board Anchor charts from the year so far... Join us next week for a Q & A with a guest blogger, a fourth grade teacher starting math workshop this year! :) Tabitha & Chloe

So after noticing that it said here that this Lego board game had been made with Boardmaker, I thought, ooooh, possibilities... downloaded the free trial, and spent an afternoon with Sprout designing ... *drumroll*... a Minecraft boardgame! We played today as Sprout's current skin, ChimneySwift, AntVenom and CaptainSparklez. I've put what we made in Googledocs so you can download the board, health and hunger tokens, pickaxe and sword cards, and rules here, and if you go to this site and put your Minecraft username in you can print off a tiny little Minecraft you (just remember to add little tabs round the edge when you're cutting out or it will be difficult to put together), plus go to this page for other skin models to print. (If you want to make your own rules or introduce blocks etc, that site has loads of 3D ones to print and build.) We put the little people's feet into blocks of air drying clay so they stand up. Also we printed off a diamond block and added spots for a dice, but you could print off any block you liked. Have fun Minecrafters!

Hi friends! Well this week we completed our recap unit on teen numbers and place value introduction! Be sure to view my 2 previous place value posts {here} and {here} This week we worked on 2 fabulous handson place value activities, place value word problems, & more! The place value word problems went really well! They helped the students expand on their thinking. You can see an example below! We went through the completed problem together before the students tried one on their own. My students were doing really well stating, "13 is 1 group of ten and three ones." However, when I would say, "Johnny how many groups of ten are in the number 13?" I would get a blank look from some or the answer "13?" That is why I wanted to place the tens/ones Tchart on these word problem sheets! I also made a tens/ones Tchart on my whiteboard and I said something along the lines of....If we take the number 13 and place it in this Tchart we will see that there is one group of ten and 3 ones. I reminded the students to place the teen number in the Tchart in their head to remember how many groups of ten are in each teen number. This REALLY helped! Place Value Word Problem Practice Sheet If you are interested in the place value word problem practice sheets you can click the image below to view on TpT. They sell in a packet of 10 for $2.00 We also worked on 2 handson place value activities from two awesome bloggers! The first activity is called Don't Spill the Beans! You can find it {here} on Kindergarten Crayons. We also worked on Place with Marshmallows! You can find that {here} on Babbling Abby. We finished the week with a place value fun day! We worked with a small group to match place cards with numeral cards, build teen numbers with tens/ones sticks, and Place Value Move it! Those activities are all in my new Place Value Mini Unit! It is just over 20 pages and sells for $3.00 in my TpT store! Click below to view! Next week we will begin our unit in addition. I CAN NOT wait! :) Happy Saturday and don't forget to check out my 20% off sale that goes until Monday, March 11th!

Children get to explore numbers in a variety of forms. Numeral to set These types of games are very simple to make. Pick any theme. Cut shapes or buy them already cut out. Then find something that goes with the shape to use as counters. I like using those shaped erasers you can buy at the dollar store. Here are butterflies cut from the ellison machine. I put numbers 110 on the front and 1120 on the back just so higher level thinkers can have a challenge. I have snowmen, cars, Christmas trees, hearts, and flowers. Any little manipulative piece can be paired with a shape to make a thematic game. You can also buy store bought games and adapt them to your needs. This game is cute but is too easy. It is set up more like flash cards so that kids can count the number of M&M's on each card. I use bowls or thought about making candy jars with the little M&M pieces. great number work This site has the cutest printable number games. Fun and good for fine motor This is cute, but I would use dots and numbers. adorable file folder game light table counting This would be neat while talking about families. Kids could make their own family. here are autumn number playdo mats and a number stamping chart and lots of other free printables. Number Order Here I made a puzzle out of an old calendar picture. The picture helps the children put the numbers in order. This would work well with stick puzzles too. Printable hundreds board Here are the cutest cupcakes you can download. Counting by tens looks yummy Here are some neat ideas for your math centers. I like how she uses space to create a center. Here is a cute game for working with odd and even numbers. Here are neat number activity centers Writing numbers here are some cute writing sheets and number chants to help children remember how to make the numbers.
