Book Club, Books I Ve, Reading List, Favorite Book, Historical Fiction, Native American, Club Book
On my "To Read" list... Another pinner said: "Little known fact from our history... 1,000 "white women" traded for peace with native Americans... amazing story. Couldn't put it down.--sounds good."
One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. One of my favorite books. Our book club read it and we still talk about how good it is.
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus - historical fiction, the account of several "civilized" woman married to Cheyenne Indians (Chief Little Wolf) as part of a government program (General Grant) in the mid-800s in Nebraska territory. interesting, quick read - believable, draws you in, you won't want to put it down.
April - One Thousand White Women- 3/12 - OK I found this very interesting and enjoyed it until the last chapter. That is 2 book club books in a row that were downers at the end :
The story of Mary Dodd who travels west in 1875 to marry a Cheyenne Indian. A good historical fiction book!
Historical fiction about a woman who chooses to live with the Native Americans (1875) in order to find her personal freedom.
Wow, it just feels like a true story and what an emotional, completely unique, enthralling one at that. White women who are escaping all manner of lives go become "the wives" in a Native American tribe in order to meld white and "Indian" races together in early-ish America. Really great historical fiction. And I love novels written in journal or letter-form!
Book Club November 2014- One Thousand White Women, a good historical fiction book.
One of our first book club books. Still memorable.
Still reading this one...

The Magician's Assistant. Anne Patchett. It slices your soul apart and then stitches it back together with kisses. One of the best books I have ever read. <3
When a mysterious magician dies, his widow embarks on a journey that unearths startling secrets about both him and herself — this astonishing and acclaimed novel from an award-winning, New York Times bestselling author braids the ordinary and miraculous for a tale that’s “something of a magic trick in itself” (Newsweek) ($2.99)
Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors. I liked this book about a magician's assistant and her life after her magician dies.
Fun characters (and names!), and I now weirdly have lots more respect for LA and magicians :)
