That's the Other Side of This Life (Long Beach, Honolulu, etc.)
Over time, with enough travel and changes, you develop alternative cities of the heart to go with the one where you started, in my case, Long Beach, California…
These wonderful WPA-era paintings were saved when the Carnegie Library burned and was demolished. However, city fathers--in their infinite wisdom--actually cut the bottoms off the paintings in order to make them fit in this space in the then-new 1970s Long Beach Public Library Main Branch. Reportedly, the amputated portions of the paintings still survive, but have not been reattached. And, for the record, I believe this to be a photo of the paintings in our CURRENT Main Library.
3 Hawaiian princes schooling in San Mateo, hopped a train to Santa Cruz and carved redwood surfboards to tackle the San Lorenzo rivermouth. Later, they were imprisoned for attempting to prevent the Overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Posted on the 4th of July.
