Characteristics of the style include: low pitched gable roofs, wide overhangs, tile roof coverings, thick adobe walls, "L" shaped or "U" shaped floor plans, and internal courtyards often lined with covered porticoes or open porches. All of these characteristics were adaptations to the weather patterns of the region, particularly the desert heat and sudden downpours.
