“According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with 4 arms, 4 legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.”

On a frozen Moscow morning in January 1950, Siamese twins, Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyopova were born. The delivery was by caesarian section. On awakening from the anesthetic, the mother was told her babies had died shortly after birth. This was a lie by the Soviet medical authorities. Instead, they took the girls away to a medical institute in the Moscow region and used them for experimentation and exhibit.

Mengele, of Auschwitz, would perform on twins trying to create Siamese twins by cutting and sewing the bodies of twin children together.

Millie and Christine McCoy (1851-1912) were conjoined twins born into slavery. They and their mother were sold to a showman, Joseph Smith. Smith and his wife educated the girls; they eventually could speak five languages, dance, play music, and sing. They were known as 'The Two Headed Nightingale'. In the 1880s they retired and purchased a small farm. Millie died of tuberculosis at age 61, with Christine following hours later. They remain one of the oldest-lived set of conjoined twins.

Conjoined twins Josefa & Rosa Blazek (1878-1922) with Rosa's son in 1910. I don't know of any other conjoined twin giving birth. Their manager was rumored to be the father, but they never disclosed this publicly. Little Franz joined their act as 'the son with two mothers'. The twins came down with influenza in 1922 and died within minutes of each other.

twin photogrphs in black and white
Tomoko Sawada’s ID400 was produced while she was a university student and living in Kobe. Sawada spent weeks changing her physical appearance with make-up, clothing, and hairstyles, creating 400 different identities using a machine whose sole purpose is to produce stable images for official documents. The facial characteristics are so varied that the photographic project becomes a compelling study of physiognomy.

The zodiac sign of Gemini, the celestial twins. A persian artist has depicted Gemini in the guise of twin royal pages from the Safavid court; wearing scarlet red Persian robes and silk headgear. This likely belonged to a larger scientific manuscript on astrology with images loosely based on early Greek works. Ca, 1600 Iran.
